However, the most successful online businesses are the ones that take an active and aggressive approach towards link building. The process becomes standard routine for them no matter how popular or busy their website is. You must develop a link building strategy and continually work on it.

One of the resources is the Keyword Rank Checker. This is an excellent tool to check your search engine position ranking in the major search engines for any keyword. This tool also produces an advanced report that includes related keywords.

The Keyword Rank Checker is easy to use and the results are produced very quickly. All you do is key in the keyword or keyword phrase you want to check, plus the domain (www.StarrBizz.com for example), a competitor's domain if you want (it is optional), and a verification or access code.

I entered one of my top keyword phrases - web biz opportunities - and was very pleased with the (expected) results! The phrase ranked #1 in Google, #1 in Yahoo! and ...what? Only #5 in Bing?

Actually, when I looked at the Bing-specific report, while it did show one of my web biz blog posts in the fifth position, I was happy to discover that the #1 ranking website turned out to be (drum roll) www.StarrBizz.com! I didn't check, yet, to see why that didn't show up in the condensed report, but I'm not complaining.

The report also lists a series of related keywords and when you click on any of them, it brings up a new Keyword Rank report showing where your website sits with the selected keyword. Once again, it is very quick, very informative ... and extremely interesting.

The aim of every home based Internet business marketer should be to create a search engine friendly website.

Successful search engine optimization will include several basics such as layout and design, targeted keyword phrases and off site techniques such as article marketing and a focus on getting back links. I have highlighted these in previous Web Bizz Blog posts.

Everybody has their favourite SEO methods and techniques. Here are a few success tips I have picked up from experienced marketers.

1. Search engines like to see domain names that are registered for two years or longer at a time. This shows confidence and longevity in your business and will make it friendlier when it comes to being ranked by a search engine.

2. Remember, although you are targeting search engines for traffic, your real audience is the visitors who come to your website. Focus on your niche and design your site to appeal to human visitors.

3. Choose keyword phrases that relate to the theme of your site. This makes it more search engine friendly and more likely to rank high for those targeted words. Build a lengthy keyword list that you can expand upon as you develop your site and add more pages to it.

4. When designing your website, consider your target market and always keep it in mind.

Choose a general theme that your site will follow and maintain consistency from one page to the next. Pay attention to details such as background color, font style and size. Try to keep this uniform throughout your whole website.

5. Professional online marketers and home based web biz enthusiasts build websites that are rich in unique content. Search engines hold content-rich websites in higher esteem than sites filled with content that is duplicated on other sites.

Unique content typically means content you have written or have purchased or obtained exclusively for your site. Such content allows you the flexibility to monetize it with things such as pay-per-click text links, banners, and affiliate programs that you represent.

It doesn't have to be difficult to build a search engine friendly website and the benefits can be realized almost immediately as well as into the future.

If today's blog post seems a bit like deja vu to you, that's great because it is intentional. It doesn't matter what kinds of home based web biz ideas and opportunities you promote, if you don't have your website or blog optimized properly for the search engines, you could be heading for disappointment.

For many web biz marketers, effective SEO can make the difference between success and failure. When you are new to home based web biz marketing opportunities, the learning curve is steep and even your Internet marketing mentors and teachers sometimes don't know where to begin in guiding you!

Newcomers to the home based Internet marketing business often feel overwhelmed by the amount of information that is thrown their way. Suffering from information overload, they get lost in "strange" industry terms and phrases and don't exactly know how to prioritize the recommended steps to web biz marketing success.

Internet marketing coaches and mentors do their best to provide guidance, but again, there is just so much to learn and it is all inter-related. It takes the student time to become familiar with the marketing methods, the priorities and the jargon.

When I was new, "SEO" was one of the terms used freely by "experienced" web biz marketers, but seldom explained well enough for a newbie like me.

==> SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization"

Basically, SEO is the process of "optimizing" your website, blogs, articles and other online resources so the Internet search engines will more quickly index them and add them to the results pages when people do online searches for particular words and phrases.

Effective SEO is important because it can drive your website to the first page of the search engine results, and websites on the first pages get the most traffic.

When I was new to the home based Internet marketing business, I knew nothing about SEO or the 3 key steps to search engine success. I understood nothing of the importance of keywords or onsite optimization or offsite optimization.

I knew that in offline marketing uniqueness was the name of the advertising game: you created a unique name, catchy phrases and flashy advertising to get the prospect's attention.

However, marketing your web biz opportunities online is a different story. An online business with an established web presence might be able to use similar offline techniques effectively online, but the average web biz marketing enthusiast, and especially the newbie, needs to first follow established SEO practices to get their websites indexed and on the search engine radar screens.

What's In A Name?

The web biz SEO starting point for most home based Internet marketing newbies should be their domain name. Unfortunately, by the time most of us discover how important this is, it's too late. We have already selected our domain name and have spent a lot of time and money promoting it.

I am a prime example. I chose StarrBizz.com (with two r's and two z's) to be unique. I chose the blog title, GT Bulmer Web Bizz Blog (again, two z's in bizz) to be unique.

If you do an Internet search for StarrBizz or StarrBizz.com and if you do a search for web bizz or web bizz blog, you will see my site and my pages on the first pages of the search engine results.

That's great ... but ... people who don't already know "StarrBizz.com" will not think of keying it into a search field, and few people will key in "bizz" with two z's or "GT Bulmer" unless they have already found my website or my Web Bizz Blog page and are checking me out.

What I should have done to help accelerate my web biz success in the beginning was selected the keywords that I wanted to target for search engine optimization, then used those keywords in my domain and blog names.

Thanks to a new understanding of SEO based on insight into the 3 steps to search engine success, I am finding alternative ways to compensate for and overcome the challenges of having a "unique" domain name and "unique" blog name.

So, my web biz SEO success tip for today is, when choosing a website or blog page name, consider basing it on your targeted keywords for maximum search engine optimization effectiveness.

What's in a name? SEO success - THAT's what's in a name. It can make a huge difference in your web biz marketing success.

For some home based Internet business marketers, learning HTML is a huge challenge. However, with a little patience and a little persistence, you CAN master the basics for Web Biz Success!

In yesterday's Web Bizz Blog, I mentioned the mystery of HTML, emphasized the importance and value of lifelong learning and the guidance of experienced mentors and outlined some of the HTML basics.

Today:

A Struggle, an Alarming Experience and a Breakthrough

For me, in the beginning, learning HTML well enough to make changes to my StarrBizz.com website was a real struggle. Some of the basics, like bold, underline and italics were easy. Setting up hypertext links wasn't too difficult. And I quickly got the hang of linking images.

But working with other web page elements proved to be more challenging. Like how to properly place new text boxes so I could insert text or banners or other features exactly where I wanted to on the page.

It was months before the HTML code to do that started making sense to the point where I knew what I was doing and understood why I was doing it. It has to do with how tables and frames are set up in the background code, understanding where they start and end, and how they relate to each other in that code.

Then there was the alarming experience I had with my Web Biz Blog template. One time, early on in my HTML experience, I was making what I thought was a very simple change to the template and wham! There went the entire template formatting!

All kinds of strange characters showed up on the actual web page; text was missing and replaced with HTML code and code words; links to other page elements, plus archived stories and a few other very important things no longer functioned properly. The whole thing was messed up.

I looked at the source code and tried to correct the errors, but nothing I did would reverse or resolve the mess completely. As an HTML newbie, I was terror-stricken for the better part of a day as I tried to get my blog fixed.

Eventually, I restored the template from my backup copy (thank goodness for the wisdom of doing a backup copy!), then went back and made that simple original change using a different method, and everything turned out fine.

My struggles with HTML continued for a number of months until one day, a breakthrough! It was like an awakening. I was busy working on some site changes when suddenly it dawned on me ... I KNEW what I was doing!

Whereas before I felt like I was flying blind, applying hit and miss changes, having to double check and review every little thing to see if it worked or not, this time I was zipping through with complete awareness, understanding ... and confidence! What a great feeling of empowerment.

I still have a long ways to go to fully grasp the intricacies of HTML. But now that I know the basics and feel somewhat competent and confident, I am encouraged to forge ahead.

If you are new to HTML, or have some experience but are struggling with the challenge, be encouraged: it does get better with time. Give it a chance, stick with it and chances are you will experience a breakthrough, too.

Once again, I emphasize the value of lifelong learning and a commitment to practice and persistence.

In the long run, you will benefit on a personal level and you will be better able to effectively promote your home based Internet business ideas and opportunities. Learn the basics of HTML how-to and you will enjoy greater web biz marketing success. That's what I know!

When you're new to Web Biz Marketing, everything is a mystery, and I think for many home based Internet business opportunity marketers like me nothing is more mysterious than HTML!

When I first started developing my home based web biz and started promoting Internet business ideas and opportunities I was a complete newbie to HTML.

HTML stands for "Hyper Text Markup Language" and it is a language that was totally foreign to me!

Sure, others who had gone before tried to convince me that HTML wasn't all that difficult to understand and learn. But when you look at a page of text filled with odd characters in weird formations, and you know that altering or deleting even a few of those characters could mess up your whole web page (it happened to me!), you get a little leery about attempting the task.

Fortunately, I have two things going for me:

1) I am devoted to lifelong learning, and even though I get frustrated easily (ask my marketing mentors!), I am able to stay focused and committed to learning the new things I want to learn. It may take time, but I manage it because experience has taught me that it is well worth it in the long run.

2) I found a mentorship group with the experience, knowledge and patience to guide and instruct me in my quest for home based web biz marketing success. And it turned out that several of them have great insight into HTML and SEO (search engine optimization).

HTML, What Do I Know? A VERY Brief Overview of the Basics

HTML is a markup language. A markup language uses a set of annotations to text that determines how the text is to be displayed - for example bold, italics, underline, headings, paragraphs, lists, etc.

HTML is written in the form of tags surrounded by angle brackets. In addition to describing the structure of text-based information in a document it is also used to describe the structure of interactive forms, images and various other page elements.

You can tell which files and URLs contain HTML - they usually have .html or .htm in the filename extension.

Much of what I have learned about HTML and SEO has come from the guidance of web biz marketing mentors in the PIPS Power Group.

As a continuing student of effective SEO practices, I try to spend some time each week learning and applying effective SEO techniques to enhance the visibility of my StarrBizz.com Internet Home Business opportunities website in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

The first thing I learned about SEO was that your keywords must be relevant to your website. Visitors who have found your site via a search engine are looking for something in particular and you don't want to disappoint or discourage them or you will quickly lose them.

The second thing I learned was that you need to choose a keyword phrase that gets a reasonable number of searches each month, but not a phrase with too much competition.

Your goal is to have your website appear on the first page of search results with a phrase that a good number of people are searching for, but if that phrase is too popular with other Internet Marketers, your chances of making the first page are reduced.

It can be quite a balancing act to find the right keyword phrase, but tools and resources are available to help make the process easier.

One popular keyword phrase tool is the free Google Adwords Keyword tool. This resource will help you get an indication of the number of searches there are each month for your desired keyword phrase, or for any alternative phrases you want to check. In fact, the tool will give you alternative phrases.

My SEO mentor, Suzanne Morrison, says that depending on your market, she does not recommend choosing a main keyword phrase that drops below 2,000 searches a month.

To test how much actual competition a particular keyword phrase has, you can type it into the search engine with quotes. Suzanne does not recommend using a keyword phrase where the number of competing sites is over 100,000. "Anything under 1,000 should be easily achievable," she adds, and "anything in between should be achievable with some work."

After choosing your keyword phrase, type it into a search engine (no quotes) and check out the first-page competition. What do you think? Can you compete? Is it worth working towards using the keyword phrase you have selected?

Other factors to be considered in your decision are the number of backlinks the top competitors have and how well they have optimized their websites using the keywords in their page title, page headline and throughout their web page; also, whether or not they are a popular authority site or a major company.

One thing to note is, even if they have more backlinks than you, you may still be able to compete with them if they are lacking in their keyword phrase optimization.

Search Engine Optimization is an important practice for any online marketer looking to gain an advantage on the Internet.

Proper research and use of Keyword Phrases is vital to your Search Engine Optimization efforts. When you apply effective SEO to improve your ranking in the SERPs you attract more traffic to your website and you enhance the profitability of your proven Internet home business ideas and opportunities.
