Some of you know that I am a big fan of Suzanne Morrison and the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) training materials she has provided me with from time to time. One of my favourites is Suzanne's 3 Steps to Search Engine Success eBook.

More Upsell Strategies For The Home Based Internet Business

GT Bulmer, StarrBizz.com A wise marketer will consider all options when planning and applying marketing techniques. Following up on yesterday's blog post, here are a few more upsell strategies for the home based Internet business.

As mentioned in the previous web biz blog post, "upselling" is the process of attracting a potential customer with one offer, then suggesting an alternative item that is of better quality or has more features.

Typically, the alternative item costs more and produces a higher profit for the seller. However, both choices remain available and the customer is free to choose one or the other.

Below, you will find a few more suggested upsell strategies, these also taken from my Home Internet Business Tips Newsletter:

1. Time Upsell: If the product or service you are selling is by subscription, you could offer a discounted price if they subscribe for two years instead of one.

2. Quantity Upsell: This is similar to the Discount Upsell mentioned yesterday, however with the Quantity Upsell you increase the discount by how many products they order. For example, if they order three it's a 10% discount, if they order five it's a 15% discount.

3. Extra Upsell: Does your product have things you could charge extra for? Like custom designs, imprinting, gift wrapping? Offer the extras for a special price available only at the time they are purchasing the main item.

4. Extended Upsell: Some products come with a warranty. If your product comes with a warranty, ask your prospects if they would like to extend it for another year for a specified additional cost.

5. Affiliate Upsell: This is a common one within home based Internet business circles. When you're selling a product you could offer someone else's product as an upsell. The product upsell should be similar to the first item, but it should offer better quality or additional features and should provide you with an affiliate commission that is greater than the profit you would earn on the first item.

Even More Home Biz Ad Copy Ideas

I thought I was finished with this topic for now, but apparently not! ;-) Here's even more home biz ad copy ideas to help with your Internet Marketing business.

Yesterday's web biz blog post listed several advertising copy tips as a follow-up to the previous day's post on the same subject.

I didn't think I had anything more to say on the topic, but I just checked my notes and guess what? I DO have a few more tips to pass along. Once again, these come from my Home Internet Business Tips Newsletter, and once again, they are simple and basic, nothing earthshaking, but good to know and apply.

At least, I am hoping some readers will find value and inspiration here.

1. Use Mind Altering Words: The word "fast" can be effective; fast delivery, fast results, fast ordering. Also, guaranteed, limited, discount, sale, important, new.

2. Make your ad benefits as specific as possible. Include exact numbers, percentages, times, colors, smells, sounds, descriptive adjectives, etc.

3. List all the ways your product is different from your competition's. Include all the differences in your ad copy that are better than their product.

4. Use graphics, pictures and drawings of people actually using your product to solve their problem. Include a picture that also shows the results.

5. Tell your audience what kind of support they'll get after they buy. It could be free consulting, tech support, free servicing, etc.

As simple and obvious as some of these tips may seem, it's never a bad idea to review them from time-to-time to refresh your memory. They just might contain the seeds of inspiration that could blossom into a bouquet of even more home biz ad copy ideas.

More Home Business Ad Copy Ideas

In yesterday's blog post, I listed a few handy advertising tips for your home based web biz. Today, here are a few more home business ad copy ideas.

As mentioned in yesterday's web biz blog, individuals respond differently to different messages. Words that motivate one person may have little or no affect on the next.

For that reason, as a home based Internet business marketer, you will want to create and test your ad copy using different angles. When you find a formula that produces results, it's good to focus on it, but it is also wise to never stop testing other variations. You never know when you might find something better.

Once again, the ad copy ideas presented today come from my Home Internet Business Tips Newsletter, available free to subscribers.

1. Learn From Example: Pay attention to ads and other promotional material you see on the Internet or receive from other marketers. Keep a file of ads, headlines and other copy ideas that strike you as being exceptional. Use them as examples on which to base your own ads.

2. Know Your Purpose: What do you want your ad copy to accomplish? Do you want to generate leads, qualify prospects, attract traffic to your website, make sales? Write your copy according to the purpose.

3. Know Your Target Audience: Make a list of the reasons your target audience would buy your product. Prioritize the list, then depending on the size of ad you are writing, use all or several of the top reasons in your copy. Be sure to highlight the biggest benefit.

4. Begin With the Biggest Benefit: Begin your ad with the most important benefit in either the headline or first sentence. When you do this, not only does it grab attention immediately, it also helps attract and qualify your best prospects.

5. Include Factual References: Prospects respond well to ad copy that includes references to customer surveys, product reviews, scientific tests or studies and the like. Use only factual references that can be verified in case the fact is questioned or challenged.

Advertising copywriting is a whole profession unto itself, but you don't need to be a professional copywriter to produce effective, order-pulling ads for your home based web biz. While many more home business ad copy ideas are available, these basic tips are enough to get you started on the road to marketing success.

Home Based Business Ad Copy Ideas

Some Internet Marketers are naturals when it comes to writing advertising copy. The rest of us have to work at it! Here are a few home based business ad copy ideas that might help.

It is always a good idea to consider alternative ways to write your advertising copy and present your offers. We all know that different people respond to different messages in different ways, so it stands to reason to test different ideas.

Here are some taken from my free home based business tips newsletter. I realize that not all ideas are suitable for all situations. Use what you can, modify them however you want or simply draw inspiration from them to come up with your own unique twists and ideas.

1. Benefit Intensifiers: Create a benefit intensifier for each item in your list of ad copy benefits.
For example, The Benefit: Save More Time. The Benefit Intensifier: Never Seen Before.
Add some additional quality to each benefit to further enhance its appeal.

2. Ask Questions: Whether it is in your ad copy or on your website, when you ask your prospects and visitors questions that induce thoughts, feelings, memories and emotions, it helps influence them to make the buying decision. The more they associate their needs and interests with the product, the more likely they are to buy it.

3. Use Image and the Power of Suggestion: Most people care about what other people think of them. You can use this as leverage to get them to warm up to your product. Tell your prospects the positive things their friends or family will probably think when they buy your product.

4. Humor: When used appropriately and respectfully, humor in your home business ad copy could provide the little extra motivation that is sometimes needed to close the sale. Light humor often relaxes people and when they are in a good mood they are more receptive to your sales suggestions.

These home based business ad copy ideas are fairly basic, but they are worth considering and applying. A good rule of thumb in advertising is to involve and engage your prospects however and wherever you can.

How serious are you about creating your own product to give away or sell on the Internet? An eBook is a great idea, but it can be challenging. If it is something you are thinking about, here are a few web biz eBook tips.

Most home based Internet business marketers know that once you gain enough experience and confidence, it is wise to think about creating your own web biz products to market online. You might sell them, or give them away as a reward to paying customers. Or you might simply offer them as incentives to help build your email list.

Whatever purpose you have for creating your own product, a web biz eBook is a great choice because it doesn't have to cost much to create and distribute, it doesn't take a lot of specialized knowledge to produce one, and you can personalize an eBook in a way that few other products allow.

However, some of the elements involved in both the production end of creating the eBook and in the marketing that must follow may challenge your time, your patience ... and your commitment to the eBook project! But don't worry, it's worth the effort and if you use recommended eBook software to guide you, it will reduce the stress.

The first step is choosing the topic of the eBook. Most web biz marketers look within their own marketing niche to find a suitable subject. Do some research to determine a topic that will have meaning, purpose and value for your targeted readers. The best topic will focus on filling a specific need or offering a solution.

The second step is writing the eBook. Again, first do some research and planning to make certain your content is highly relative, informative, effective and well organized so the reader can follow it, apply it and benefit from it. This may take some time to research and put together, but remember, your reputation is at stake. When all is said and done, you'll be glad you made the effort and the rewards for quality will make it all worthwhile.

The third step is determining how you will market the eBook. How you choose to promote it may influence how you plan and prepare for other steps in the process. A few common promotional methods are:

- Basic Blogging
- Article Marketing
- Promoting to an existing email list
- Forums and other Social Networking
- Pay Per Click
- ClickBank
- Advertising in newsletters, ezines, etc.

The Next Steps

Once the eBook is written and you have some firm ideas about the marketing methods you plan to use, here is a list of tasks to consider that will take you through the next stages of the project:

- Choose the design components: page layout, text styles, graphics, cover design

- Create an attractive, appealing sales page

- Create a lead capture page

- Create a Thank You page

- Create any necessary or preferred legal policies: disclaimer, privacy policy, terms of use, etc.

- Set up an autoresponder system to capture your customer details and to deliver the Thank You message and the link to the eBook

- Set up or plan a tracking system so you can monitor the performance of the various marketing methods and also to allow for the split testing of different sales pages

- Create a series of follow-up emails for your customers; one set can be for captured prospects who have not yet purchased the eBook and one set containing follow-up offers for customers who have purchased the eBook

As you can see, many factors go into making and effectively marketing a quality eBook. It can be a big responsibility that requires focus, commitment and organization.

The Perfect Home Based Business Opportunity

Everybody has their own preferences, their top choice work from home opportunity, but what is YOUR idea of the perfect home based business opportunity?

Regardless of what enthusiasts and promoters say about their own opportunities, your perfect home based business opportunity will likely have to be something you are personally interested in. If you hope to succeed in a home based web biz, you need to be comfortable with your choice.

Years ago, back in the 70s and 80s when I first started looking into home business ideas, I got a hint of the type of product and service I would want to promote and sell. I didn't realize, back then, that it would develop into a marketing niche that would eventually become available to home based enthusiasts as a business opportunity. At that time, I looked at it simply as a training resource that would help me develop into a better person and a better marketer.

I am referring to personal develop products and the entire personal development industry. This now includes written material, audios, videos, Internet technology, seminars, webinars, workshops and more.

Personal Development topics cover anything and everything imaginable:

- Sales, Sales Strategies and Sales Management
- Life Balance
- Goal Achievement
- Psychology of Wealth
- Parenting
- Communication
- Negotiation
- Investing
- Real Estate
- Starting a Business
- Public Speaking
- Entrepreneurialism ...

... and this is just the SHORT list!

In the beginning, the personal development industry focused largely on qualities of character, like Positive Thinking, Goal Setting, Perseverance, Persistence, Attitude and so on. Since then, it has expanded to include training and education in every possible area of human existence.

Never suspecting it would one day become available as a home based business opportunity, I immersed myself in the personal development products of the day and still refer to books, audios and videos I have purchased over the years.

As a home based freelance writer I have used or referred to a variety of personal development themes and authors in my articles and blogs on numerous occasions.

And now, having discovered what is for me the perfect home based business opportunity, I am applying my interest and enthusiasm for personal development to the benefit of others. At least, I am making them aware of the availability of the opportunity and inviting them to check it out to see if it fits with their needs and interests.

Increase Website Traffic With The Power Of Suggestion

Suggestive selling is nothing new, but some home based Internet business marketers may not know how to increase website traffic with the power of suggestion.

Many years ago... many, many years ago... I got my start in the business world as a management trainee in the restaurant business. Yes, I started as a dishwasher in high school, then worked my way into a cooking position and eventually into management.

I learned many valuable lessons in those formative years: customer service, quality control, resource management, staff relations, not to mention scheduling, goal setting, focus, determination, perseverance...

One element of the restaurant business that really stood out to me was the emphasis my trainers and mentors placed on Suggestive Selling: customers respond well to the power of suggestion. And this principle applies to every industry.

In the restaurant business, here is the best example of suggestive selling and the power of suggestion that I can think of. See if you recognize it:

The server asks, "Would you like fries with that?" or "Would you like that supersized?"

That's it. The server or seller (in any industry) simply plants the seed of suggestion into the mind of the customer and leaves it there to germinate. In many cases, the customer responds favourably.

Sales trainers through the ages tell us that if you don't ask for the sale, you may not get the sale. So ask.

The other thing is, the customer can't make a decision if he or she doesn't know what the options are. It stands to reason, then, that in order to do their job effectively the seller or server has to "suggest" the options to help the customer make a decision.

Years ago, in the restaurant business, we trained our servers to "suggestive sell" dessert at the end of the meal. They didn't just ask if the customer wanted dessert. They actually presented each and every customer with a tray of various types of desserts and asked which one they wanted. The customer clearly knew that the cost of the dessert was extra. Even so, presented with the options, the majority of the customers couldn't resist taking one. That is the power of suggestion.

How to Increase Website Traffic

Now, let's bring this concept into the 21st Century; the present day, as it relates to Internet Marketing and how to increase website traffic with the power of suggestion.

Here are several "suggestive" phrases that you can post on your website that will help increase your web traffic. This info is taken from the StarrBizz.com Home Internet Business Tips Newsletter available free to subscribers. It's not new information; you may have seen some of it elsewhere on the Internet:

1. "Bookmark This Website Now": Actually tell your website visitors to bookmark your site. Their bookmark will act as a reminder to return. And if you also suggest a reason to bookmark and return, such as "new content added regularly," this will strengthen the power of the suggestion.

2. "Subscribe to Our Free Ezine": Point your visitors to your sign-up link and tell them to sign up. Not only will this help you build your list, but each time they read an edition they will be reminded to return to your website.

3. "Sign Our Guestbook": Ask visitors to sign your guestbook. The power of suggestion will produce more responses than just placing a guestbook link on your homepage. 4. "Use Our Free Content": Consider the exposure you can get by letting other marketers post your articles on their sites or in their ezines. Be sure to ask them to include your resource box with any content they use.

6. "Fill Out Our Online Survey": Again, don't just post the survey link, ASK your visitors to fill it out. Suggestive selling can be powerfully effective in both generating sales and in motivating visitors to do something you would like them to do, such as the things listed above and more.

Providing a list of links to these features on your website is one thing. Taking it to the next level by asking or telling your visitors what to do is much more effective because it plants the seed of action in their mind.

Whether you pay for it or find free sources, ezine advertising can be an effective way to promote your Internet business and get your offers distributed far and wide in a timely manner.

Just like any consumer, web biz enthusiasts are cautious with their money and want to know they will receive fair value when they spend it.

When it comes to advertising on the Internet, marketers want the biggest bang for their buck. One way to achieve this is to advertise in online ezines - electronic magazines or newsletters - because these publications typically reach targeted audiences and the ads are not expensive.

Like many newbies to the world of home based web biz marketing, I struggled to find dependable sources for advertising on the Net. My budget was limited and I could not afford to advertise in any of the big, well known online publications. Then I was introduced to a handy directory of ezines and found a fast and economical way to reach targeted prospects.

Now, here's a bit of personal insight about advertising. A number of years ago I used to sell advertising in print publications. All too often, I heard customers complaining that they ran their ad once and didn't get the response they were hoping for. On the other hand, advertisers who budgeted for several ad runs in a row were much happier with the overall results. And if you look at the Big Dogs in any industry, they don't run ads; they conduct advertising campaigns. They spend big money keeping their names in front of their targeted audiences continuously.

Small home based web biz marketers don't have that kind of budget. However, if you listen to Internet Marketing mentors, they tell you that testing, testing, testing is the order of the day for any kind of advertising, marketing and promotion you do. In other words, you need to run ads several times to test the results; you need to test your ads in a variety of publications; and you need to test variations of the ad to find out what people respond to the best.

The process is not necessarily quick, but if you want to develop a successful business, it is important.

As I mentioned earlier, you can choose to pay for advertizing or you can spend time seeking sources of free ads, which are definitely out there. You can also engage in blogging and social networking, however it is also recommended that you use all the marketing methods at your disposal and ezine advertising is one of them.

Blogger vs. WordPress: Which is Best?

Active web biz marketers are well aware of these two main services for free blog hosting, but when considering Blogger vs. WordPress, which is best?

Ultimately, the answer to that question comes down to your individual needs and preferences. Each of these two popular blogging platforms offers particular benefits and features, and each can serve your blogging needs quite effectively.

In fact, many of my web biz marketing friends and associates host blogs on both services in order to take advantage of the best of both worlds. Over the past week or so several of us have been discussing this topic in the Entrepreneur Forums at EvanCarmichael.com. Guests are welcome to browse the topic at Poll: Blogger or WordPress Blog?

At present, I use the Blogger.com service because it was recommended when I first started blogging and it is what I am accustomed to. The service is free and you can either move the hosting to your own server, as I have done, or you can leave the hosting with Blogger.com.

One advantage of hosting it on your own website is that it gives you more freedom in what you choose to post in your blog articles and on your blog template page. If you leave your blog hosting with Blogger.com, you must be careful to obey their Terms of Service (TOS) or risk having your Blogger account closed without warning. The same holds true for the WordPress.com service.

Now, back to the question of Blogger vs. WordPress, which is better? Here are a few comments from the discussion in the Entrepreneur Forums topic thread:

Alan Mater said: "WordPress is simply way ahead of the game. I'll admit it's more complicated than Blogger, but it's worth it. When I started my new niche site, I used WordPress. Had it up and running in about a minute or less thanks to Fantastico."

Alan lists some of the WordPress advantages as being the ease of use and customization, plugins readily available, SEO benefits and "do follow" capability.

David Hurley said: "I use both. I love how easy it is to set up a Blogger blog, and I like its close relationship to Google. I'm setting up a new site now with what will be a fairly stable html site and Blogger blog which will serve as the main article directory and the dynamic part of the whole site. I would recommend Blogger to newbies simply because it is so quick and easy to set up."

Tanny Lahav said: "I own one WordPress blog and several Blogger blogs. Both services have their advantages and disadvantages. I love working with both of them. I recommend both, depending on your needs and abilities to learn new stuff."

Tim Stokes said: "When I joined the PPG (PIPS Power Group) last year and found out how important blogging was, I had the free WordPress blog installed for me and I haven't looked back since. I absolutely love it."

Michelle Jayes said: "Like Tim, I got the free WordPress blog installed for me and must admit that I love it."

Trent Brownrigg said: "They both have advantages and disadvantages. Blogger is easier to get set up and I think it is better if you are building niche blogs, or a blog just for the purpose of posting content to rank in the search engines. I think WordPress is better for flagship blogs and other blogs that you want to look good and have a lot of functionality."

Top 10 Words Used in Email Subject Lines

MailerMailer.com has just released its ninth bi-annual Email Marketing Metrics Report highlighting the latest trends in email marketing. Included: The Top 10 words used in email subject lines.

MailerMailer is a do-it-yourself email list management provider located in Rockville, D.C.

In addition to revealing the Top 10 most popular terms used in email subject lines, MailerMailer's bi-annual Email Marketing Metrics Report "also provides instructional material for designing mobile-friendly emails (because) with more people viewing email on Blackberrys, iPhones and other hand-held devices, there is an increasing need for marketers to pay attention to (that) segment of their target audience."

Available to the public, the 38-page report summarizes the data of over 300 million messages sent in the second half of 2008. Included in the report are charts, tips and data providing businesses and marketers with "information to help them adjust their email marketing strategy to cater to their audience's changing needs."

The reason I am highlighting this report in my Web Bizz Blog is because first, I believe the information is highly relative to my readers who are primarily home based web biz and Internet marketers. Second, because the Top 10 list of words used caught my eye and quite frankly, I am surprised at some of them.

However, since the report covers recent performance data from 21 different industries, I will have to accept the statistical results.

The report is well worth looking into. Among other things, it notes that emails are being opened sooner, email deliverability keeps increasing, religious/spiritual emails get the highest open and click rates compared to other industries, and more.

Website Visitors Seek Quality Content

Getting visitors to your website is a tough business. Getting them to return can be tougher unless you start off on the right foot. The thing is, website visitors seek quality content.

The object for most home based web biz enthusiasts is to sell stuff on the Internet. To do this, you need to set up an attractive website and drive visitors to it. There are numerous ways to drive traffic. A few examples: blogging, social networking, online marketing forums, article marketing, advertising, viral marketing via ebooks, e-courses, newsletters and other informational or instructional materials.

However, driving traffic to a website is not the ultimate answer. There are only so many potential customers and once they pass through your web space, then what? An Internet Marketer needs to place a great deal of emphasis on getting the same visitors back again.

The best way to get visitors back again is by giving them a good reason to return. Think about this: what did they come to your website for in the first place?

Information! They came looking for information, in some format, that you promised them. It might have been in the form of an advertisement for a product or service, or a program review, an article, a solution to a problem they have.

Whether or not they will remember your website and ever return again will depend on two key factors:

1) Did you live up to your promise? Did you deliver the goods, whatever it was that they came looking for? If you did and they left happy, chances are they might return again.

2) Content! Website visitors seek quality content. Something got them to your website, but in order to motivate them to return, your site has to demonstrate some degree of promise that they will receive additional benefit on each return. Fail to do this and they will likely not make the effort to come back.

On the positive side, the more effectively you do this, the more likely they will return. And if you do your job well, they might even tell others to check out your website.

Despite what some contemporary marketers try to tell you, the old cliche that "Content is King" still holds true. You can design the fanciest website, but what attracts people and what they remember best is the value you give them, and more often than not, that value comes in the form of content.

When using content to encourage visitors to return again and again, there are two important elements to keep in mind:

1) The best content is rich content. That is, informative, insightful, authoritative content that is focused on your niche or theme or whatever pitch you use to attract visitors.

2) Content must be updated regularly; it must be fresh. The more often you can add new, beneficial content, the better. Even loyal visitors will tire of going to a site that seldom exhibits any change.

In my opinion, web biz marketers should look beyond the simple act of just attracting traffic to their sites. Their plans should include the next step in the process: how to motivate and encourage visitors to return. Content rich information is the key because when all is said and done, website visitors seek quality content.

Twitter Unveils New Pages

One of today's most popular social networking sites has just introduced some new design upgrades as Twitter unveils new pages when you click the Following and Followers links.

Log in to your Twitter account, click on Following or Followers, and you will discover some new features and options.

On your Following page, you can now choose to see an Expanded view or a List view.

In List view, you see the member's avatar picture in miniature plus their Twitter ID and their name.

In Expanded view, you see their full-size avatar pic, their Twitter ID, their name, where they are located and their most recent Twitter post.

In either view, there is an icon beside each member that produces a drop-down menu letting you choose to send an @message, Unfollow, or Block.

The Followers page has the Expanded or List view options, a "Follow" icon, and the drop-down menu offers these choices: @message, Direct Message, Follow, Block.

Also on the Followers page, you will see a check mark beside other members who you are reciprocally following.

By the way, these new page features are available on any member profile you visit.

More details are available in the official Twitter blog. Look for the June 30, 2009, blog post.

It's nice to see these upgrades, but personally, I don't expect them to improve my Twitter experience. Still, human nature is a fickle thing and as resistant as many of us are to change, we also respond well to new things because we have a tendency to get bored with things that remain the same for too long.

Power of the Master Mind

The book, Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill, is a treasure trove of inspiration. Chapter 10, Power of the Master Mind, offers some particular wisdom for entrepreneurs.

Seven decades after it was first written, Think and Grow Rich remains a highly influential guide for personal development. References to this amazing book often appear in posts in the various online business and marketing forums I participate in regularly.

Most everybody has heard of the book. Most everybody who has read it, loves it.

I was thinking about the power of the master mind lately, how it can benefit an entrepreneur to partner with other likeminded individuals, either in business, directly, or simply to brainstorm ideas or offer feedback to each other. Of course, recalling the chapter in Napoleon Hill's book covering the subject of the master mind, I had to grab my dog-eared copy and check it out once again!

In this chapter, Hill explains that "power" is required for personal achievement and the accumulation of money. Power, he says, is "organized and applied knowledge" and there are three particular sources of knowledge:

- Creative Imagination
- Accumulated Experience
- Experiment and Research

The bigger the project or the grander the plans, the more "power" is required to bring them to pass and, therefore, the more "knowledge" is needed. At some point, an entrepreneur needs a boost with this and that's where the "power" of the master mind comes in.

Hill relates the stories of two successful and famous businessmen of his day who benefited from the application of the master mind principle.

First, Andrew Carnegie, the person who inspired him to research and write the book.

Carnegie's master mind group consisted of a paid staff of about 50 men, each contributing ideas and knowledge to advance Carnegie's business interests. "He attributed his entire fortune to the power he accumulated through this master mind," says Hill.

Henry Ford was another businessperson who applied the master mind principle successfully. Once he befriended Thomas A. Edison, notes Hill, Ford began to make rapid strides in his business. Outstanding achievements continued when he formed the acquaintances of Harvey Firestone, John Burroughs and Luther Burbank.

Today, it may not be as easy to form master mind alliances with people of obvious great talent. A person may first have to prove their own value in order to win the attention and approval of others.

However, the 21st Century entrepreneur does have a few promising avenues to consider:

1) Seek like-minded individuals - entrepreneurs with similar goals and aspirations; develop relationships of mutual respect and support with them ... and watch for the cream to rise to the top! The best places to find such individuals are in online business and marketing forums and social networking sites.

2) Seek personal mentorship from experienced marketers. There are a number of online membership organizations that offer this form of mentorship and marketing support.

Home Based Internet Business: Speed vs. Stamina

It has been said that the Home Based Internet Business is not a race, it is a marathon. Speed is not as important as skill and stamina.

Today, July 1, the second annual Summer Contest got underway at the PIPS Power Group (PPG). The PPG is an online membership site offering a wide variety of marketing information, resources and personal mentorship from experienced members of the Plug-In Profit Site (PIPS) marketing group.

The primary purpose of the Summer Contest is to make PPG members aware of a particular list of best marketing practices and encourage them to develop daily habits of applying those best practices. Beyond awareness and skill-development, the ultimate goal is to help each contest participant advance their home based Internet business and increase their sales.

In launching the annual contest, one thing that our PPG mentors have emphasized is the fact that the contest is not a race: it's not how fast we achieve the contest requirements, rather it's how consistent our efforts are and how we stay focused and committed until the contest ends.

Also, our progress will be measured in a couple of specific areas. For example, the progress of our Alexa Ranking will be monitored throughout the contest as will the development of our Yahoo! inlinks (backlinks).

To remain in the running for the prizes we need only work steadily on the list of tasks, submit daily reports of our efforts ... and stick it out to the end.

What I like best about this contest is that the playing field is level. The tasks to be done and the process of measuring progress are designed to give each participant an equal chance. There is enough variety to compensate for the fact that different people have different skill levels and different areas of expertise.

The other thing I particularly like about this contest is that even though there are prizes to be won, everybody wins simply by participating. As mentioned, one object of the contest is to help PPG members improve their marketing habits and increase their marketing success. Every task a participant completes serves to promote and improve their home based business in some way.

One of the strengths of this contest is the simple fact that it is not a race, it is a marathon. And that is the best model I can think of for any home based web biz.

In tomorrow's blog post, I will share a story about a local woman who was in a relay race recently and how her focus, commitment and determination can be inspiring to us all.

For now, remember that when building your home based Internet business, speed vs. stamina should be taken into account when making plans and setting goals.

Website Traffic Ideas

I know that home based web biz marketers appreciate website traffic ideas because the more traffic to a website, the more opportunity there is to get paying customers.

It's that time of the year when I'm on the fly, off visiting family in faraway lands (well, over in the next province). Since I have only a few minutes to write this post, I'll keep it simple.

For the Internet Marketer, one of the biggest challenges can be attracting traffic to a website. With time, experience and effective Search Engine Optimization practices traffic will begin to grow naturally. In the mean time, a marketer needs to consider all opportunities for attracting traffic.

Here are a few website traffic ideas to think about:

- Offer free, original content. If you can be the only source for certain resourceful information, you will attract visitors.

- Offer a free newsletter or e-zine. If you set this up as a subscription in your autoresponder, subscribers will be reminded at regular intervals to visit your website for more great info.

- Offer other free stuff, like samples of your products or services or free software.

- Provide current, up-to-date links or full news stories that relate to your marketing niche or USP (Unique Selling Proposition).

- Provide a free onsite directory. It can be a directory of websites or certain topics or services, each related to your niche.

- Set up a free contest to attract visitors and return visitors. A quiz format is popular. Offer a prize or prizes. If you can, set it up so visitors can earn extra points for referring others to the contest, or to your website.

These are just a few website traffic ideas. Perhaps something here will spark some traffic ideas of your own!

Internet Business Strategy

It has never been easier to start a home based web biz, but to be successful, you need a proven Internet business strategy; you need to get the competitive advantage.

The Internet has opened up a world of opportunity for entrepreneurs at all levels. However, the same open environment is also creating a marketplace that is becoming more competitive with each passing day.

Brian Tracy, bestselling author, professional speaker and successful businessperson, says, "If you want to win in today's marketplace, you have to engage in marketing warfare."

To be successful, you are going to have to take a much more aggressive role in identifying your targeted audience and getting out there doing the things you need to do to get their attention and persuade them to buy from you. You need to develop an Internet business strategy.

I just reviewed an iLearning Global presentation featuring Brian Tracy, titled Engage in Marketing Warfare, and I posted the review in the Entrepreneur University section of the EvanCarmichael.com Entrepreneur Forums.

In the video, Brian highlights the difference between "marketing" and "selling."

Basically, marketing is "the way you tell the world that you have a product or service that they can use" and selling is "the process of persuading people that what you are offering is the best choice among all choices that are available." More detail about this is given in the review.

Brian also outlines the four key principles of marketing strategy: Specialization, Differentiation, Segmentation and Concentration. Again, more detail can be found in the review, This is Marketing Warfare!, posted in the Entrepreneur University forum.

In Brian's iLearning Global presentation, he asks such questions as:

- What is your area of specialization?
- In what ways are you better than your competition?
- What is your Unique Selling Proposition and who is the customer that will most appreciate it?
- How do you want to be described by your customers? This description will influence everything you do to attract and keep your customers.

Brian also highlights the importance of "branding." Branding has been defined as "the promises you make and the promises you keep."

As a business leader and professional business coach, Brian's insight and recommendations have proven to be effective time and time again.

In these challenging times, whether you are looking to establish a traditional business offline or an Internet based home business, if you truly desire success, you are going to have to look at ways to step up your marketing efforts.

Internet Based Home Business

Not everybody desires personal success and financial independence. For those who do, there are few better opportunities for achievement than through an Internet based home business.

While there are some people who do seek formal business education before starting an Internet based business, the majority of entrepreneurs get into Internet Marketing without any special training because it is very easy to start a part-time home business. All a person needs is a computer, connection to the Internet and a few hours each week to devote to their new venture.

Advantages of a home business that is Internet based include:

- the freedom to work on it during hours that best fit your schedule

- the costs to start and run a home based business are minimal for a computer and Internet access

- a wide variety of products, services and delivery can be provided by online suppliers

- marketing training and sales aids such as websites, banners and other advertising materials are often provided by the online supplier

- you might be in business for yourself, but you are not by yourself; information, support and encouragement is easily available online from other home business entrepreneurs through online business forums and social networking sites

- additional sources of sales and marketing training and personal development are readily available from a variety of sources online 24 hours a day, seven days a week

Of course, all success, whether business or personal, must begin with fervent desire, a sense of purpose, clearly defined goals, the ability to focus both attention and effort, and a firm commitment to the end result.

Success does not come from half-hearted efforts. You'll never get anywhere if you simply wade into the river up to your knees, then rush back to shore frightened by the current or the temperature of the water. Success means setting your sights on the opposite shore and diving in for a no-excuses, no-turning-back swim all the way across the river.

Famous race car driver Mario Andretti had this to say about personal success: "Desire is the key to motivation, but it's the determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek."

Learn More, Earn More

One vital element of personal and business success in this, the Information Age, is knowledge; when you learn more, you earn more. However, for true achievement, the act of learning is not quite enough.

The experts used to say that knowledge is power. We now know that knowledge on its own is not power; knowledge simply carries the promise and potential of power. Therefore, it's not what you've learned that counts, it's what you DO with what you have learned that makes all the difference.
