You've seen them around the Internet. You've probably heard the name and wondered what it is or how it works. You might even have looked into it, but were unsure about following through. I'm talking about the web biz Gravatar. Got yours yet?

Gravatar stands for globally recognized avatar. It is your personal icon or avatar image that, once registered and set up, "follows you" around the Internet. In other words, anywhere you go that is gravatar-enabled and where you sign in or leave a comment, your gravatar will appear along with your user name.

I've known about gravatars for a few years, but never made the effort to get mine set up until a few weeks ago. Lately, I've been visiting blogs to pick up ideas, leave comments and, in some cases, earn valuable backlinks.

A fair number of blogs are gravatar-enabled and it always annoyed me that some blog commenters had their avatar or profile photo displayed but all I ever got was a silhouette image that made me look like the Unknown Visitor or a missing person.

It's easy to sign up for a gravatar.com account, and it's free. All you need is an email address.

However, I spent a few days trying to get my gravatar image to appear on enabled sites. I didn't realize that you had to use the same email address on those sites as the one registered to your gravatar image. Of course it makes sense to me now. But then, I simply thought it was like a membership site where you can sign up with a private email and list a public one for web biz marketing purposes.

The good thing is, once you are registered you can add additional email addresses and link the same or different avatar photos to them. Again, it's real easy to do. And once you have at least one email address and corresponding image, in very short order you will begin seeing your gravatar on enabled sites.

Personal branding is a big thing in Internet Marketing and setting up a gravatar allows you to develop a consistent, recognizable presence. Wherever you go on gravatar-enabled sites, your image will be the same. If you update your gravatar image for any reason, it automatically updates everywhere it has been posted. Imagine the convenience!

Most of the online marketing tools that I use have been the result of recommendations by marketing friends and associates. Here are a few that I use for tracking various aspects of my web biz. * StatCounter.com: This was the first tracking resource I installed on my website. Recommended by my marketing mentors, StatCounter provides real-time detailed web statistics. You will be able to analyze and monitor all the visitors to your website. Discover your popular pages, entry pages, exit pages, where visitors came from, keyword analysis, visitor lengths and much more.

* Google AdSense: When you install Google AdSense on your web biz content pages, targeted Google ads will be displayed and you will earn revenue from valid clicks or impressions. When you log in to your AdSense account, you can get a variety of insightful reports including the number of AdSense page impressions, clicks, earnings and more. AdSense also gives you access to a variety of other resources and site diagnostic tools.

* Google Analytics: Similar to StatCounter, Google Analytics gives you "rich insights into your website traffic and marketing effectiveness." Examine visitor statistics, pageviews, pages per visit, bounce rate, average time on site and more.

* Google Webmaster Tools: This is the newest work from home web biz tracking tool I have installed on my website. Referred to me by Evan Carmichael of EvanCarmichael.com, the primary aim of Google Webmaster Tools is to improve your site's visibility in Google search results. This resource provides detailed reports that give you Google's view of your site and allows you to diagnose problems. You will also get comprehensive details about internal and external links to your site, and you can find out which search queries drive traffic to your site - see exactly how users arrive there.

I am pleased that Evan encouraged me to install Google Webmaster Tools. The internal and external links reports alone are eye-opening and extremely beneficial to know about.

As mentioned earlier, there are many online resources available to help you to both build your home based web biz and track the activity on your web pages. With a little experience and research, you will discover a wide variety of helpful tools.

If you know me, you know that I am a dedicated home business enthusiast. I like looking at work from home ideas and I am actively involved in building an Internet Marketing business around web biz products, services and opportunities. Maybe you have noticed?

Some of my web biz blog readers and home based Internet business friends know that I have been interested in work from home plans and opportunities for a number of years. If you are reading THIS blog post, chances are YOU have some degree of interest in such plans yourself.

How about it? Do you like work from home ideas?

My interest first began some number of decades ago, long before ordinary people like me could even envision something as wonderfully liberating as the World Wide Web. Instant communication! Who would have thought it possible in such a format? (A few people, fortunately.)

In the "olden days" we had to do our marketing strictly by snail mail. You remember that, don't you? That's where you had to write something on a paper, fold it a few times, stick it inside of another paper that was folded and glued into kind of a pouch shape, lick some sticky stuff to seal it, lick a postage stamp to go on the outside, add someone's physical address, deliver it to the local postal service, then hope they do their job and deliver your important sales message to your prospect in some faraway land.

Whew! That was a lot of work just explaining it! Am I ever glad that the good people at the Internet decided to tell us about websites, email marketing and instant electronic delivery of information without the need for printing and physical mailing! And I am forever grateful that they are letting us use the technology.

But, I digress. Years ago I became interested in all those ads in various magazines offering all kinds of opportunities to work from home and earn extra income. I wanted to know how to do it. I wanted to learn all the secrets to home business success that the advertisers promised to reveal.

Well, the "secrets" then are the same as they are now:

1) Find a product (or service or opportunity) in demand;

2) Prepare some powerfully appealing advertising copy (ads, letters, promotional packages);

3) Get your message in front of millions of people;

4) And a percentage of them will become customers.

The number of customers (sales) you got, then as now, depended on the popularity of the product, the quality of the prospect, and your persistence in continuing to send your sales message to the masses.

Over the years, smart marketers learned a few additional tricks ... er, I mean "secrets."

a) Choose a niche market (it can also be a niche within a niche - think about that);

b) Focus your ad copy on how the product solves problems for the customer. Benefits and features are nice, but help the prospect visualize exactly how the product is going to solve some problem for them;

c) Pre-Qualify your customers. Targeted prospects convert better than the "shotgun" approach where you simply mail to the masses irrespective of their interests or needs. To pre-qualify your prospects, you first attract them with a free offer that is directly related to the main product you want to sell. Once they have shown an interest in the free thing, then send your high-powered promotional package for the main product.

d) The Money is in the List: It is typically easier and less expensive to sell a second product to an existing customer than it is to get a new customer. When you pre-qualify your prospects, and especially when they buy something, make a list. Keep their contact information and periodically send them additional offers that you have already determined they will be interested in. Follow up.

Today, the Internet has improved the whole marketing process significantly and instant, mass communication has accelerated the potential for great sales success.

In other words, if you take time to learn how to apply the "secrets to success" your chances for financial independence will be greatly enhanced.

All that remains is to choose a product (or service or opportunity) in demand, get some insight and training from the experts, learn to use technology to your advantage, and be persistent in your income goals.

One great way to expand the reach of your marketing message is to join forces with other Internet business owners. You can form strategic alliances to help each other out. Here are a few thoughts on ways to power up your web biz with the help of friends.

A few web biz blog posts ago, I gave some personal examples of Internet Home Business Friends Who Inspire. Today, I'll take that idea a few steps further with thoughts on how to partner with people to reach far more targeted prospects than you can on your own.

In previous posts, I've mentioned some of the benefits of social networking with sites like Twitter, online membership groups like the Niche Power Group and business forums like the EvanCarmichael.com Entrepreneur Forums. Not only will you come into contact with like-minded web biz marketers, be inspired by their stories and learn from their experiences, but you will also have the opportunity to build relationships of mutual convenience and profitability.

Now, let me emphasize the "relationship" aspect in this equation. There are two ways to attempt to establish a strategic alliance with another web biz marketer: you can come at them out of the blue, introduce yourself and hope you make a good first impression; or you can join their social group, get to know them, let them get to know you, and then suggest an alliance that you determine to be suitable and appropriate.

Once you establish that friendly relationship, here are a few ways you might consider to help power up your web biz for mutual benefit:

1. Swap endorsement advertisements with your web biz partners. Endorsement ads can attract more sales and traffic than regular ads, and you get the additional benefit of backlinks.

2. Exchange banner ads. This can be a straight exchange for advertising space, or you can sweeten the pot by selling each other's products (for a commission). You can also cross promote related products.

3. Create a catalog of Free Bonuses, also known as Joint Venture Giveaways, that you each advertise and promote. Also, you can let other marketers use the catalog as an incentive for their own prospects and watch it go viral.

4. Exchange Guest Blog posts and articles to be posted on your websites.

5. Exchange ads with ezine publishers. They run your ad in their publication or on their website and you run their ad on your website or in your publication, if you have one.

The basis of success with Internet Marketing is getting your message out to as many qualified prospects as possible. One way to expand your reach is through strategic alliances with other marketers.

I was a J.O.B. slave for years until one day I woke up and said, "Why am I working for other people when I have so many of my own aspirations and unfulfilled dreams?" I broke free and now I work from home.

Everybody has a story and here is mine in a nutshell. I was inspired to post this in my web biz blog after writing something similar in the Real Work at Home Jobs Forum where I am an active member.

A few years ago I came to my senses, made some changes and managed to break free from the ridiculous J.O.B. cycle where all you are doing is helping someone else fulfil their dreams and prepare for their comfortable retirement. I have to wonder what job slaves think when they get to the end of their "useful" years and realize they've done little to pursue their own dreams?

I didn't want to find myself in that second-guessing, self-doubting situation, so I chose to quit my J.O.B. and work from home, doing something I want to do and enjoy doing. I am now a home based freelance writer and aspiring Internet Marketer.

Don't get me wrong. I don't completely regret the years I spent working for other people. It was all great experience.

Some of my "day jobs" were like getting paid to go to school. You know, on-the-job training with pay. The skills and professional business and service attitudes I developed helped me become a better person; more confident, more knowledgeable, more aware of what I wanted from life on a personal basis.

However, I wanted more from life than just working for someone else. I want to someday look back with satisfaction at things I achieved for my own benefit.

Like writing and Internet Marketing. These were natural choices for me.

I've always had an interest in writing, but never really worked at developing the skill until I landed a newspaper job several years ago. The few years I worked there proved to be the best educational investment in my future that I ever made.

Likewise, I've always been interested in home based marketing, promotion and selling. Although I did dabble in home based business here and there over the years while working at day jobs, I never truly focused on developing the interest.

Until one day when something finally clicked and I quit the job I had at the time and decided to focus on freelance writing and Internet Marketing while working from home.

I have certain income goals that I have not yet reached, but they will come in time. Since I work from home, I can go at my own pace and truly, truly take time to enjoy the journey. That is one of the greatest benefits of working for yourself.

I am much happier now and SO much more relaxed. In fact, when I had a J.O.B., it was a chore dragging myself out of bed every morning. Now, I jump out of bed early every morning to work on writing and marketing, and after spending time each evening with my spouse, I will often stay up until midnight or 1am continuing to work on my home biz. It's great!

I know it's not easy for everybody to up and quit their job and strike out on their own. Some may have to work at it step by step on a part time basis. Nothing wrong with that at all, as long as you remain focused and determined.

One of my favourite sayings is, "It takes courage to push yourself to places that you have never been before... to test your limits... to break through barriers."

Do you have unfulfilled dreams and aspirations like I did? For those who have the ability and the courage to break through their barriers, I say, "Forget the J.O.B. - Work from home!"

I am a member of several online social networks where I interact regularly with home based business entrepreneurs from around the world. In today's web biz blog post I am going to tell you about two who have inspired and encouraged me over the past few days.

Web Bizz Blog Improvements

The basic plan for my Internet home business is to create a marketing site (StarrBizz.com) that is appealing to visitors in both design and content. I feel somewhat confident in my "eye for design" but my technical skills are severely lacking. However, thanks to web biz mentors and friends, I am learning.

The page template for my website is one that many other marketers also use. We have the freedom to change and modify the template any way we want, but for inexperienced designers like myself, it is a long, slow process.

On occasion, we get really brave and ask our home business friends and associates for "feedback." Well, you know what they say about honesty; the truth sometimes hurts. You like to think you're doing everything right and there's nothing more you can do to improve ... and then the feedback arrives. (I say that with a chuckle.)

Fortunately, when your friends are supportive and want to see you succeed, the feedback they provide is constructive, relative and helpful.

Ros Bott, The Career Life Coach, gave me some advice for my Web Bizz Blog a couple of days ago that should have been obvious to me. Ros said to add some pictures or graphics to help break up long stretches of text.

Duh. I know that. So why wasn't I doing it? Good question. Mental block? I really don't know. Thanks, Ros, for waking me up!

I already knew how to insert photos and graphics, but the challenge I had was knowing how to "wrap" or "float" text around the graphics. This is where my next Internet home business friends come in.

Leon and Deana Bowes, Christian Home Based Business, don't know it yet, but they provided the inspiration and technical knowledge I needed to decipher the "text floating" challenge.

Knowing that some of my Internet Marketing friends use interesting design ideas, I looked around and noticed that Leon and Deana use graphics with floated text at the beginning of their blog posts. Sooo ... I took a sneak peek at their source code and discovered the secret to text floating success. Thanks, Leon and Deana!

I can't end this blog post without acknowledging my own dear spouse who is not directly involved in my home based web biz, but supports me in other ways. She spent time surfing the Internet looking for design solutions and we also spent some "quality time" together scanning through an HTML sourcebook seeking solutions. She is my life partner AND my best friend!

Building a business can be challenging, but remember this: you are not alone. You can enhance the experience by drawing strength from Internet home business friends who inspire you.

Okay. Home business is nothing new. Going global with the Internet is nothing new. Going global with your own home business is nothing new. But have you really thought about what it means when your home based web biz goes global?

We live in the Age of the Shrinking Global Village. The Communication Age, where your "neighbours" can be on the other side of the world, yet you can sit right here and communicate with them instantly with no delays and little, if any, cost; all you and they need is a computer with Internet access.

Technology is truly amazing. We now use little hand-held devices and notebook-sized computers to communicate around the world, whereas at one time not too many years ago we needed a computer the size of a room to do that! And the quality of that communication was poor and much slower.

The spinoff to this amazing technology is that anybody who has the interest and the initiative can start up their own home based business and instantly go global with the Internet.

When you think about it, this is powerful stuff!

You can choose a few products or services, put up a website, add some niche-related content plus your ad banners and sales message, and away you go: you're in the home based Internet business! Of course, there's more to marketing success than just that. You need to optimize your website and your marketing materials for the search engines, and you need to advertise, promote and network your new business every which way you can.

But the main thing is, the potential is there and it is technology and the Internet that lets you quickly go global with your home business.

A Different Dynamic to Consider

The purpose of business is to generate sales and make a profit. Some idealists will tell you that the purpose of business is service; that is, to provide a product or a service to the consumer. "We are here to serve," they will tell you.

However, the fact is, if a business isn't making profit, or showing the promise of making profit in the foreseeable future, most owners will lose interest and the business will fold. Service is simply a side-effect of the quest for profitability.

As mentioned in the previous web biz blog post, "upselling" is the process of attracting a potential customer with one offer, then suggesting an alternative item that is of better quality or has more features.

Typically, the alternative item costs more and produces a higher profit for the seller. However, both choices remain available and the customer is free to choose one or the other.

Below, you will find a few more suggested upsell strategies, these also taken from my Home Internet Business Tips Newsletter:

1. Time Upsell: If the product or service you are selling is by subscription, you could offer a discounted price if they subscribe for two years instead of one.

2. Quantity Upsell: This is similar to the Discount Upsell mentioned yesterday, however with the Quantity Upsell you increase the discount by how many products they order. For example, if they order three it's a 10% discount, if they order five it's a 15% discount.

3. Extra Upsell: Does your product have things you could charge extra for? Like custom designs, imprinting, gift wrapping? Offer the extras for a special price available only at the time they are purchasing the main item.

4. Extended Upsell: Some products come with a warranty. If your product comes with a warranty, ask your prospects if they would like to extend it for another year for a specified additional cost.

5. Affiliate Upsell: This is a common one within home based Internet business circles. When you're selling a product you could offer someone else's product as an upsell. The product upsell should be similar to the first item, but it should offer better quality or additional features and should provide you with an affiliate commission that is greater than the profit you would earn on the first item.

One way to make more money on each sale is to use upsell strategies for the Internet based home business.

If you are like most Internet Marketers, one of your primary goals is to get more money out of each and every sale. It can be quite challenging to get customers in the first place so you want to make the best of every selling opportunity you get.

By the same token, every customer wants the best value for the lowest price. That's quite likely why they were attracted to your offer in the first place: it was the product or service they wanted at a price they felt comfortable with.

However, since value is sometimes more important than price, this gives you the opportunity to offer your prospect something that may cost a little more, but provides better quality or additional features. This is called "upselling." You attract the prospect with your best deal, then present them with alternatives before they make the buying decision.

Upselling happens all of the time in all industries. It happens in real estate and auto sales. It happens with electronics, appliances and furniture. It happens with footwear and clothing. It happens in restaurants, hotels and with vacation packages. Upselling can also be put to good use in the Internet based home business.

Here are a few suggested upsell strategies I've picked out from my Home Internet Business Tips Newsletter:

1. Deluxe Upsell: This is the standard example. You offer a basic product, then for a little more money, they can get the deluxe edition with enhanced features.

2. Money Upsell: This is popular in Internet Marketing. Customers who buy your product can be offered the rights to resell the product. You would charge an extra fee for the reproduction or resell rights.

3. Discount Upsell: If you are selling a consumable product, something the customer may purchase again at a future date, you could offer them a second one at a discounted price if they buy it now.

4. Free Upsell: You could offer the basic or "economy" model as a free sample or trial then tell people if they order the full or "deluxe" version right now they will get a discount.

5. Package Upsell: Offer your prospects a package deal. When they come looking for the product advertised, also offer it in a package with other similar products. Point out the fact that each of the products is cheaper in the package than if they were purchased separately.

These are just a few possible upsell strategies for the internet based home business. You can use them or adapt them any way you want for your own web biz products, programs and services.

Yesterday's web biz blog post listed several advertising copy tips as a follow-up to the previous day's post on the same subject.

I didn't think I had anything more to say on the topic, but I just checked my notes and guess what? I DO have a few more tips to pass along. Once again, these come from my Home Internet Business Tips Newsletter, and once again, they are simple and basic, nothing earthshaking, but good to know and apply.

At least, I am hoping some readers will find value and inspiration here.

1. Use Mind Altering Words: The word "fast" can be effective; fast delivery, fast results, fast ordering. Also, guaranteed, limited, discount, sale, important, new.

2. Make your ad benefits as specific as possible. Include exact numbers, percentages, times, colors, smells, sounds, descriptive adjectives, etc.

3. List all the ways your product is different from your competition's. Include all the differences in your ad copy that are better than their product.

4. Use graphics, pictures and drawings of people actually using your product to solve their problem. Include a picture that also shows the results.

5. Tell your audience what kind of support they'll get after they buy. It could be free consulting, tech support, free servicing, etc.

As simple and obvious as some of these tips may seem, it's never a bad idea to review them from time-to-time to refresh your memory. They just might contain the seeds of inspiration that could blossom into a bouquet of even more home biz ad copy ideas.

As mentioned in yesterday's web biz blog, individuals respond differently to different messages. Words that motivate one person may have little or no affect on the next.

For that reason, as a home based Internet business marketer, you will want to create and test your ad copy using different angles. When you find a formula that produces results, it's good to focus on it, but it is also wise to never stop testing other variations. You never know when you might find something better.

Once again, the ad copy ideas presented today come from my Home Internet Business Tips Newsletter, available free to subscribers.

1. Learn From Example: Pay attention to ads and other promotional material you see on the Internet or receive from other marketers. Keep a file of ads, headlines and other copy ideas that strike you as being exceptional. Use them as examples on which to base your own ads.

2. Know Your Purpose: What do you want your ad copy to accomplish? Do you want to generate leads, qualify prospects, attract traffic to your website, make sales? Write your copy according to the purpose.

3. Know Your Target Audience: Make a list of the reasons your target audience would buy your product. Prioritize the list, then depending on the size of ad you are writing, use all or several of the top reasons in your copy. Be sure to highlight the biggest benefit.

4. Begin With the Biggest Benefit: Begin your ad with the most important benefit in either the headline or first sentence. When you do this, not only does it grab attention immediately, it also helps attract and qualify your best prospects.

5. Include Factual References: Prospects respond well to ad copy that includes references to customer surveys, product reviews, scientific tests or studies and the like. Use only factual references that can be verified in case the fact is questioned or challenged.

Advertising copywriting is a whole profession unto itself, but you don't need to be a professional copywriter to produce effective, order-pulling ads for your home based web biz. While many more home business ad copy ideas are available, these basic tips are enough to get you started on the road to marketing success.

It is always a good idea to consider alternative ways to write your advertising copy and present your offers. We all know that different people respond to different messages in different ways, so it stands to reason to test different ideas.

Here are some taken from my free home based business tips newsletter. I realize that not all ideas are suitable for all situations. Use what you can, modify them however you want or simply draw inspiration from them to come up with your own unique twists and ideas.

1. Benefit Intensifiers: Create a benefit intensifier for each item in your list of ad copy benefits.
For example, The Benefit: Save More Time. The Benefit Intensifier: Never Seen Before.
Add some additional quality to each benefit to further enhance its appeal.

2. Ask Questions: Whether it is in your ad copy or on your website, when you ask your prospects and visitors questions that induce thoughts, feelings, memories and emotions, it helps influence them to make the buying decision. The more they associate their needs and interests with the product, the more likely they are to buy it.

3. Use Image and the Power of Suggestion: Most people care about what other people think of them. You can use this as leverage to get them to warm up to your product. Tell your prospects the positive things their friends or family will probably think when they buy your product.

4. Humor: When used appropriately and respectfully, humor in your home business ad copy could provide the little extra motivation that is sometimes needed to close the sale. Light humor often relaxes people and when they are in a good mood they are more receptive to your sales suggestions.

These home based business ad copy ideas are fairly basic, but they are worth considering and applying. A good rule of thumb in advertising is to involve and engage your prospects however and wherever you can.

A few days ago, an advertisement for a new hybrid vehicle from a major automobile manufacturer arrived in my email. Normally, I would trash such material without giving it a glance or a second thought.

Except ... certain unique features of this vehicle caught my eye. In other words, the copywriters knew who their target market was, wrote the copy accordingly, and succeeded in getting my attention as a likely prospect.

However, that's not what I was thinking about when I clicked the link to get more information about the vehicle. I just took notice of the key features and was motivated to learn more.

This may not seem unusual, but you have to realize that I RARELY click on ads or promotional material that comes in my email. In some cases, I do not know or do not trust the sender. In many cases, the info or ad copy simply fails to draw my interest.

In the case of this new vehicle, the copywriters pushed the right buttons.

Although I seldom receive email from this company, this message wasn't unusual because we had purchased a pre-owned vehicle from one of their dealerships a couple of years ago and that is where we continue to take the vehicle for servicing. The spinoff is that the parent company has access to my name, contact information ... and thanks to a customer survey ... my interests and preferences.

Thus, this targeted email promoting a vehicle they knew would get my attention. I clicked the link for more information.

Specifically, I wanted to know the manufacturer's suggested retail price.

The site was contemporary and professional. The features and benefits presented in detail and with enthusiasm. The qualities of the unique hybrid automobile and the environmental benefits all covered completely.

But no suggested retail price was given.

Further research on the website revealed that the vehicle is not presently available for sale and will not be launched in Canada until 2011.

Needless to say, I was disappointed and my first reaction was to question the wisdom of releasing promotional material so soon and without a projected retail price.

However, as a home based Internet Marketer, I do understand the purpose and value of advance promotion and of priming your prospects to be ready for the release date of a product, whether it's a web biz product or a traditional product like an automobile. It creates interest and excitement, plus it alerts the consumer not to purchase any competitive products until this one is available for proper comparison.

Aside from that one little disappointment, I am impressed with the marketing campaign designed for this unique new hybrid vehicle. Thinking about it, here are a few key points we, as Internet Marketers, can take away from this:

- Survey your customers: Get to know them, their interests, their tastes.

- Stay in contact with your customers: Send them regular updates and offers, but not so often that they begin to devalue or ignore your messages.

- Target your market: Make sure messages sent have meaning and purpose to the chosen recipients.

- Write effective copy: Make sure your copywriting is clear and focused. You have only an instant to get their attention and motivate them to read more of the message, so identify the feature that will have the strongest impact on the recipient and make it jump off the page.

- Anticipate questions and objections and be certain to build the answers into the website where you send the prospect for more information. Few things turn a buyer off faster than failing to provide answers, or providing weak, inadequate answers.

- Invite and allow feedback: Provide options for the prospect to contact you for more information. Sometimes, this element alone gives the prospect enough confidence to make the purchase, even if they don't actually try to contact you.

A lot more goes into running a successful marketing campaign than just placing ads and sending emails to lists. An effective and thorough marketer designs every step of the campaign specifically with the target market in mind.

I can't say that I'll be in the market for this new vehicle when it is available, or that I will buy it even if I am in the market. But one thing is for sure; their marketing campaign succeeded in getting my attention and I am now signed up to be kept in the loop as more information comes available.

Now, if I can just take today's home business success tip and learn to apply these same marketing lessons to my own business!

Whatever purpose you have for creating your own product, a web biz eBook is a great choice because it doesn't have to cost much to create and distribute, it doesn't take a lot of specialized knowledge to produce one, and you can personalize an eBook in a way that few other products allow.

However, some of the elements involved in both the production end of creating the eBook and in the marketing that must follow may challenge your time, your patience ... and your commitment to the eBook project! But don't worry, it's worth the effort and if you use recommended eBook software to guide you, it will reduce the stress.

The first step is choosing the topic of the eBook. Most web biz marketers look within their own marketing niche to find a suitable subject. Do some research to determine a topic that will have meaning, purpose and value for your targeted readers. The best topic will focus on filling a specific need or offering a solution.

The second step is writing the eBook. Again, first do some research and planning to make certain your content is highly relative, informative, effective and well organized so the reader can follow it, apply it and benefit from it. This may take some time to research and put together, but remember, your reputation is at stake. Most people seem to be attracted to Internet Marketing because of the ease of starting up a home based business and because of the promise of great income potential.

Web biz marketing is a lot like any other business or profession. You first need to learn what it is, then how to do it, then how to do it well, and finally how to do it like a professional for maximum income potential.

This process takes time.

It also takes focus, determination and dedication.

In the beginning, most newbies play follow-the-leader and simply promote the web biz products or programs that attracted them into the business in the first place. This isn't necessarily the best way to do the business, but it does serve a purpose as far as getting the initial exposure to Internet Marketing and the early training and experience that is needed.

Once new marketers begin to feel their way around and start to get a sense of the way marketing on the Internet works, then they begin to understand a few things about the kinds of products, programs or services that they should be promoting.

Basically, the best rule of thumb is to choose web biz products or programs that you use, or have used, and that you, personally, find to be beneficial and of good quality. If the product or service is so great that you would willingly buy into the company, you can bet you will be able to promote it with enough enthusiasm to make believers of your targeted prospects.

This holds true for both products and programs. Use them, work with them, learn all the features and benefits available and you will be in the best position and the best frame of mind to promote them successfully.

But what should an Internet Market choose? Web biz products or programs?

Web biz products can include physical things like books, materials, software, consumer goods; anything that is delivered into the hands of the customer for their convenience and use.

The product category can also include services. Services can include subscription sales, web hosting, web development, copywriting, access to online utilities; anything where some service is provided to the customer that the customer can't or wont do it him or herself.

Web biz programs can include all forms of business and income opportunities, including Multi-Level marketing, Network Marketing, Affiliate Marketing and a variety of other money-making plans.

As with everything else, when choosing web biz products or programs, it comes down to individual preferences. Do you want to provide products and services where you put something directly into the hands of your customers? Or do you want to promote opportunities that empower your prospects to make lifestyle changes on their own?

Once you have tested the items personally, you may want to offer a blend of both products and programs. When doing this, a good rule of thumb is to keep everything within a specific market niche. You can't be everything to everybody and you will enjoy better results if you "specialize" or focus on a similar line of products, services and programs.

Many affiliate programs offer the best of both worlds: a product that you earn sales commissions on that serves also as a training manual or program for your customer, who can then use it to learn how to sell the product to earn extra income.

Again, the important thing is that you have used the product, believe in its value and can promote it confidently.

Internet Marketing success begins with a desire to achieve and a willingness to learn.

It makes no difference whether you manage a large online company or you are developing your own one-person home based web biz, branding can be a huge factor in determining the speed and degree of your success.

Branding is the process of getting your name or your business out to your prospective customers in ways that consistently influence how they feel about your products or services. In other words, when they see your emails, ads, articles or website, the image they get of you and the quality of your service is immediately positive.

The most successful branding takes it a step further. Not only do your targeted customers get a positive feeling when they see your marketing materials, but they also remember you as a possible supplier when seeking the kinds of products or services that you provide.

A good thing to remember with branding is that people still like to deal with people. You see it often on television where a store owner or business operator appears in advertisements and extends to the viewer a personal invitation to visit his or her business.

Here is a case in point: a couple of years ago, I began seeing a TV ad for a certain household alarm system. What caught my attention was the owner's presence in the ad. Actually, what really caught my attention was the fact that he was stiff, nervous and robot-like in his presentation.

However, I was impressed that he overcame his discomfort to personally present a very important message of home security. Every time that ad came on, I stopped what I was doing to watch and listen.

Well, guess what? His commitment to his business, his industry and his customers was such that through the year, each time the company created and broadcast a new ad, the owner's presentation improved. He worked hard at developing his presentation skills for each new ad.

Now, everything about his manner is relaxed and comfortable; he comes across as friendly, personal and sincerely concerned for your home safety. I like the guy! I remember him, the name of his company and even the company's ad jingle.

That is branding.

You can, and should, apply the concept to your home based web biz. Here are some branding tips for Internet Marketing:

1. Write, or have written, a report of useful information related to your industry or niche and of particular interest to your prospective customers; information that is focused, helpful and effective. Make it simple to read and easy to follow. Offer it free to your prospects and encourage them to give it away to others. This is a form of viral marketing which can be extremely powerful.

2. Promote the report in online discussion forums and social networking sites; include it in your profiles and signature files. That is all that some marketers promote in their profiles and signatures; they don't promote their website or blog. The idea is to focus on getting the report out to as many people as possible.

3. Use an autoresponder to deliver the report so you can collect names and email addresses for future follow-up. This provides you with ongoing opportunities to reinforce your branding efforts.

And give people permission to give your autoresponder email address to friends and associates; provide it in the report.

4. Make the report available to visitors on your website and blog. Place the sign-up form at the top of the page where everybody will see it. Include your photo to strengthen the personal aspect of the branding process.

5. For consistency of recognition, wherever you post your photo on the Internet, use the same picture.

The ultimate key to successful branding is getting your name and your picture out as many ways and as many places as possible. Work at developing a positive image, instant recognition and a brand that people will remember when they are in the market for what you have to offer.

Use these branding tips for Internet Marketing and you will move your business in the right direction.

Regardless of what enthusiasts and promoters say about their own opportunities, your perfect home based business opportunity will likely have to be something you are personally interested in. If you hope to succeed in a home based web biz, you need to be comfortable with your choice.

Years ago, back in the 70s and 80s when I first started looking into home business ideas, I got a hint of the type of product and service I would want to promote and sell. I didn't realize, back then, that it would develop into a marketing niche that would eventually become available to home based enthusiasts as a business opportunity. At that time, I looked at it simply as a training resource that would help me develop into a better person and a better marketer.

I am referring to personal develop products and the entire personal development industry. This now includes written material, audios, videos, Internet technology, seminars, webinars, workshops and more.

Personal Development topics cover anything and everything imaginable:

- Sales, Sales Strategies and Sales Management
- Life Balance
- Goal Achievement
- Psychology of Wealth
- Parenting
- Communication
- Negotiation
- Investing
- Real Estate
- Starting a Business
- Public Speaking
- Entrepreneurialism ...

... and this is just the SHORT list!

In the beginning, the personal development industry focused largely on qualities of character, like Positive Thinking, Goal Setting, Perseverance, Persistence, Attitude and so on. Since then, it has expanded to include training and education in every possible area of human existence.

Never suspecting it would one day become available as a home based business opportunity, I immersed myself in the personal development products of the day and still refer to books, audios and videos I have purchased over the years.

Suggestive selling is nothing new, but some home based Internet business marketers may not know how to increase website traffic with the power of suggestion.

Many years ago... many, many years ago... I got my start in the business world as a management trainee in the restaurant business. Yes, I started as a dishwasher in high school, then worked my way into a cooking position and eventually into management.

I learned many valuable lessons in those formative years: customer service, quality control, resource management, staff relations, not to mention scheduling, goal setting, focus, determination, perseverance...

One element of the restaurant business that really stood out to me was the emphasis my trainers and mentors placed on Suggestive Selling: customers respond well to the power of suggestion. And this principle applies to every industry.

In the restaurant business, here is the best example of suggestive selling and the power of suggestion that I can think of. See if you recognize it:

The server asks, "Would you like fries with that?" or "Would you like that supersized?"

That's it. The server or seller (in any industry) simply plants the seed of suggestion into the mind of the customer and leaves it there to germinate. In many cases, the customer responds favourably.

Sales trainers through the ages tell us that if you don't ask for the sale, you may not get the sale. So ask.

The other thing is, the customer can't make a decision if he or she doesn't know what the options are. It stands to reason, then, that in order to do their job effectively the seller or server has to "suggest" the options to help the customer make a decision.

Years ago, in the restaurant business, we trained our servers to "suggestive sell" dessert at the end of the meal. They didn't just ask if the customer wanted dessert. They actually presented each and every customer with a tray of various types of desserts and asked which one they wanted. The customer clearly knew that the cost of the dessert was extra. Even so, presented with the options, the majority of the customers couldn't resist taking one. That is the power of suggestion.

How to Increase Website Traffic

Now, let's bring this concept into the 21st Century; the present day, as it relates to Internet Marketing and how to increase website traffic with the power of suggestion.

Here are several "suggestive" phrases that you can post on your website that will help increase your web traffic. This info is taken from the StarrBizz.com Home Internet Business Tips Newsletter available free to subscribers. It's not new information; you may have seen some of it elsewhere on the Internet:

1. "Bookmark This Website Now": Actually tell your website visitors to bookmark your site. Their bookmark will act as a reminder to return. And if you also suggest a reason to bookmark and return, such as "new content added regularly," this will strengthen the power of the suggestion.

2. "Subscribe to Our Free Ezine": Point your visitors to your sign-up link and tell them to sign up. Not only will this help you build your list, but each time they read an edition they will be reminded to return to your website.

3. "Sign Our Guestbook": Ask visitors to sign your guestbook. The power of suggestion will produce more responses than just placing a guestbook link on your homepage. 4. "Use Our Free Content": Consider the exposure you can get by letting other marketers post your articles on their sites or in their ezines. Be sure to ask them to include your resource box with any content they use.

6. "Fill Out Our Online Survey": Again, don't just post the survey link, ASK your visitors to fill it out. Many people see the survey and think it's a good idea, but some need that extra prompting to actually do it. Surveys can be an excellent way to get valuable feedback to help you improve your site.

Suggestive selling can be powerfully effective in both generating sales and in motivating visitors to do something you would like them to do, such as the things listed above and more.

Providing a list of links to these features on your website is one thing. Taking it to the next level by asking or telling your visitors what to do is much more effective because it plants the seed of action in their mind.

Now that you have more insight into how to increase website traffic with the power of suggestion, take some action. Select a couple of the suggestions from the list and apply them on YOUR website! Oh, and one more thing: would you like fries with that?

When it comes to advertising on the Internet, marketers want the biggest bang for their buck. One way to achieve this is to advertise in online ezines - electronic magazines or newsletters - because these publications typically reach targeted audiences and the ads are not expensive.

Like many newbies to the world of home based web biz marketing, I struggled to find dependable sources for advertising on the Net. My budget was limited and I could not afford to advertise in any of the big, well known online publications. Then I was introduced to a handy directory of ezines and found a fast and economical way to reach targeted prospects.

This directory includes more than 150 ezines with a combined subscriber base of well over two million readers. Advertise to these prospects to build your mailing list, sell your products or services, or sign up new affiliates into your marketing programs. Ads start at just $15.

The process is not necessarily quick, but if you want to develop a successful business, it is important.

As I mentioned earlier, you can choose to pay for advertizing or you can spend time seeking sources of free ads, which are definitely out there. You can also engage in blogging and social networking, however it is also recommended that you use all the marketing methods at your disposal and ezine advertising is one of them.

Ultimately, the answer to that question comes down to your individual needs and preferences. Each of these two popular blogging platforms offers particular benefits and features, and each can serve your blogging needs quite effectively.

In fact, many of my web biz marketing friends and associates host blogs on both services in order to take advantage of the best of both worlds. Over the past week or so several of us have been discussing this topic in the Entrepreneur Forums at EvanCarmichael.com. Guests are welcome to browse the topic at Poll: Blogger or WordPress Blog?

At present, I use the Blogger.com service because it was recommended when I first started blogging and it is what I am accustomed to. The service is free and you can either move the hosting to your own server, as I have done, or you can leave the hosting with Blogger.com.

One advantage of hosting it on your own website is that it gives you more freedom in what you choose to post in your blog articles and on your blog template page. If you leave your blog hosting with Blogger.com, you must be careful to obey their Terms of Service (TOS) or risk having your Blogger account closed without warning. The same holds true for the WordPress.com service.

Now, back to the question of Blogger vs. WordPress, which is better? Here are a few comments from the discussion in the Entrepreneur Forums topic thread:

Alan Mater said: "WordPress is simply way ahead of the game. I'll admit it's more complicated than Blogger, but it's worth it. When I started my new niche site, I used WordPress. Had it up and running in about a minute or less thanks to Fantastico."

Alan lists some of the WordPress advantages as being the ease of use and customization, plugins readily available, SEO benefits and "do follow" capability.

David Hurley said: "I use both. I love how easy it is to set up a Blogger blog, and I like its close relationship to Google. I'm setting up a new site now with what will be a fairly stable html site and Blogger blog which will serve as the main article directory and the dynamic part of the whole site. I would recommend Blogger to newbies simply because it is so quick and easy to set up."

Tanny Lahav said: "I own one WordPress blog and several Blogger blogs. Both services have their advantages and disadvantages. I love working with both of them. I recommend both, depending on your needs and abilities to learn new stuff."

MailerMailer.com has just released its ninth bi-annual Email Marketing Metrics Report highlighting the latest trends in email marketing. Included: The Top 10 words used in email subject lines.

MailerMailer is a do-it-yourself email list management provider located in Rockville, D.C.

In addition to revealing the Top 10 most popular terms used in email subject lines, MailerMailer's bi-annual Email Marketing Metrics Report "also provides instructional material for designing mobile-friendly emails (because) with more people viewing email on Blackberrys, iPhones and other hand-held devices, there is an increasing need for marketers to pay attention to (that) segment of their target audience."

Available to the public, the 38-page report summarizes the data of over 300 million messages sent in the second half of 2008. Included in the report are charts, tips and data providing businesses and marketers with "information to help them adjust their email marketing strategy to cater to their audience's changing needs."

The reason I am highlighting this report in my Web Bizz Blog is because first, I believe the information is highly relative to my readers who are primarily home based web biz and Internet marketers. Second, because the Top 10 list of words used caught my eye and quite frankly, I am surprised at some of them.

However, since the report covers recent performance data from 21 different industries, I will have to accept the statistical results.

You can click the link to download a copy of the report yourself, but here are the Top 10 words used in email subject lines along with the MailerMailer word cloud depicting their popularity relative to a number of other close contenders:

The report is well worth looking into. Among other things, it notes that emails are being opened sooner, email deliverability keeps increasing, religious/spiritual emails get the highest open and click rates compared to other industries, and more.

Getting visitors to your website is a tough business. Getting them to return can be tougher unless you start off on the right foot. The thing is, website visitors seek quality content.

The object for most home based web biz enthusiasts is to sell stuff on the Internet. To do this, you need to set up an attractive website and drive visitors to it. There are numerous ways to drive traffic. A few examples: blogging, social networking, online marketing forums, article marketing, advertising, viral marketing via ebooks, e-courses, newsletters and other informational or instructional materials.

However, driving traffic to a website is not the ultimate answer. There are only so many potential customers and once they pass through your web space, then what? An Internet Marketer needs to place a great deal of emphasis on getting the same visitors back again.

The best way to get visitors back again is by giving them a good reason to return. Think about this: what did they come to your website for in the first place?

Information! They came looking for information, in some format, that you promised them. It might have been in the form of an advertisement for a product or service, or a program review, an article, a solution to a problem they have.

Whether or not they will remember your website and ever return again will depend on two key factors:

1) Did you live up to your promise? Did you deliver the goods, whatever it was that they came looking for? If you did and they left happy, chances are they might return again.

2) Content! Website visitors seek quality content. Something got them to your website, but in order to motivate them to return, your site has to demonstrate some degree of promise that they will receive additional benefit on each return. Fail to do this and they will likely not make the effort to come back.

On the positive side, the more effectively you do this, the more likely they will return. And if you do your job well, they might even tell others to check out your website.

Despite what some contemporary marketers try to tell you, the old cliche that "Content is King" still holds true. You can design the fanciest website, but what attracts people and what they remember best is the value you give them, and more often than not, that value comes in the form of content.

When using content to encourage visitors to return again and again, there are two important elements to keep in mind:

1) The best content is rich content. That is, informative, insightful, authoritative content that is focused on your niche or theme or whatever pitch you use to attract visitors.

2) Content must be updated regularly; it must be fresh. The more often you can add new, beneficial content, the better. Even loyal visitors will tire of going to a site that seldom exhibits any change.

In my opinion, web biz marketers should look beyond the simple act of just attracting traffic to their sites. Their plans should include the next step in the process: how to motivate and encourage visitors to return. Content rich information is the key because when all is said and done, website visitors seek quality content.

One of today's most popular social networking sites has just introduced some new design upgrades as Twitter unveils new pages when you click the Following and Followers links.

Log in to your Twitter account, click on Following or Followers, and you will discover some new features and options.

On your Following page, you can now choose to see an Expanded view or a List view.

In List view, you see the member's avatar picture in miniature plus their Twitter ID and their name.

In Expanded view, you see their full-size avatar pic, their Twitter ID, their name, where they are located and their most recent Twitter post.

In either view, there is an icon beside each member that produces a drop-down menu letting you choose to send an @message, Unfollow, or Block.

The Followers page has the Expanded or List view options, a "Follow" icon, and the drop-down menu offers these choices: @message, Direct Message, Follow, Block.

Also on the Followers page, you will see a check mark beside other members who you are reciprocally following.

By the way, these new page features are available on any member profile you visit.

More details are available in the official Twitter blog. Look for the June 30, 2009, blog post.

It's nice to see these upgrades, but personally, I don't expect them to improve my Twitter experience. Still, human nature is a fickle thing and as resistant as many of us are to change, we also respond well to new things because we have a tendency to get bored with things that remain the same for too long.

The book, Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill, is a treasure trove of inspiration. Chapter 10, Power of the Master Mind, offers some particular wisdom for entrepreneurs.

Seven decades after it was first written, Think and Grow Rich remains a highly influential guide for personal development. References to this amazing book often appear in posts in the various online business and marketing forums I participate in regularly.

Most everybody has heard of the book. Most everybody who has read it, loves it.

I was thinking about the power of the master mind lately, how it can benefit an entrepreneur to partner with other likeminded individuals, either in business, directly, or simply to brainstorm ideas or offer feedback to each other. Of course, recalling the chapter in Napoleon Hill's book covering the subject of the master mind, I had to grab my dog-eared copy and check it out once again!

In this chapter, Hill explains that "power" is required for personal achievement and the accumulation of money. Power, he says, is "organized and applied knowledge" and there are three particular sources of knowledge:

- Creative Imagination
- Accumulated Experience
- Experiment and Research

The bigger the project or the grander the plans, the more "power" is required to bring them to pass and, therefore, the more "knowledge" is needed. At some point, an entrepreneur needs a boost with this and that's where the "power" of the master mind comes in.

Hill relates the stories of two successful and famous businessmen of his day who benefited from the application of the master mind principle.

First, Andrew Carnegie, the person who inspired him to research and write the book.

Carnegie's master mind group consisted of a paid staff of about 50 men, each contributing ideas and knowledge to advance Carnegie's business interests. "He attributed his entire fortune to the power he accumulated through this master mind," says Hill.

Henry Ford was another businessperson who applied the master mind principle successfully. Once he befriended Thomas A. Edison, notes Hill, Ford began to make rapid strides in his business. Outstanding achievements continued when he formed the acquaintances of Harvey Firestone, John Burroughs and Luther Burbank.

Today, it may not be as easy to form master mind alliances with people of obvious great talent. A person may first have to prove their own value in order to win the attention and approval of others.

However, the 21st Century entrepreneur does have a few promising avenues to consider:

1) Seek like-minded individuals - entrepreneurs with similar goals and aspirations; develop relationships of mutual respect and support with them ... and watch for the cream to rise to the top! The best places to find such individuals are in online business and marketing forums and social networking sites.

2) Seek personal mentorship from experienced marketers. There are a number of online membership organizations that offer this form of mentorship and marketing support.

Napoleon Hill said, "Success comes to those who become success conscious."

When you focus your thoughts on the successful achievement of worthy goals and you do so with a definiteness of purpose, persistence and a burning desire, your goals will surely be realized. The Power of the Master Mind can accelerate the process.

Yesterday, I wrote about Speed vs. Stamina. Today, here is a true story offering seeds of inspiration to apply to your home based Internet business. Here are your 3 steps to web biz success.

This brief story is about a young woman who demonstrates focus, commitment and determination.

She is a wife, a mother and is active in the community. She also participates in marathons and recently entered a team in a charity-focused five-person relay race. On the day of the event, the other four members of the team failed to show due to illness or conflicting schedules.

Undaunted and determined, committed to the charitable cause, the young woman pressed on and ran the entire 25-kilometre five-person relay by herself on behalf of her team members.

She was able to successfully complete the relay race for three very good reasons:

1 - Commitment to the cause: She was driven by purpose, inspired by those afflicted with the disease that the event was raising funds for.

2 - Skill and Stamina: She had trained well for the event. She was prepared both physically and mentally.

3 - Focus: Her goal was clearly defined. Her focus was on the finish line. She didn't set out to see how far she could make it. Her aim was to complete the entire course despite the demands and challenges.

The young woman raised $1,600 for the cause and set a shining example of commitment, dedication and determination.

We who seek Internet Marketing success can apply these same qualities:

- we must be committed to success;
- we must be dedicated to developing the skills and stamina necessary;
- we must set clearly defined goals and cultivate an unswerving focus on attaining them.

In a nutshell, there are your 3 steps to web biz success. If your efforts falter at any stage of your business development, return to these three steps for inspiration, determine where you have strayed from your plan, and get yourself back on the winning track!

Today, July 1, the second annual Summer Contest got underway at the PIPS Power Group (PPG). The PPG is an online membership site offering a wide variety of marketing information, resources and personal mentorship from experienced members of the Plug-In Profit Site (PIPS) marketing group.

The primary purpose of the Summer Contest is to make PPG members aware of a particular list of best marketing practices and encourage them to develop daily habits of applying those best practices. Beyond awareness and skill-development, the ultimate goal is to help each contest participant advance their home based Internet business and increase their sales.

In launching the annual contest, one thing that our PPG mentors have emphasized is the fact that the contest is not a race: it's not how fast we achieve the contest requirements, rather it's how consistent our efforts are and how we stay focused and committed until the contest ends.

Also, our progress will be measured in a couple of specific areas. For example, the progress of our Alexa Ranking will be monitored throughout the contest as will the development of our Yahoo! inlinks (backlinks).

To remain in the running for the prizes we need only work steadily on the list of tasks, submit daily reports of our efforts ... and stick it out to the end.

What I like best about this contest is that the playing field is level. The tasks to be done and the process of measuring progress are designed to give each participant an equal chance. There is enough variety to compensate for the fact that different people have different skill levels and different areas of expertise.

The other thing I particularly like about this contest is that even though there are prizes to be won, everybody wins simply by participating. As mentioned, one object of the contest is to help PPG members improve their marketing habits and increase their marketing success. Every task a participant completes serves to promote and improve their home based business in some way.

One of the strengths of this contest is the simple fact that it is not a race, it is a marathon. And that is the best model I can think of for any home based web biz.

In tomorrow's blog post, I will share a story about a local woman who was in a relay race recently and how her focus, commitment and determination can be inspiring to us all.

For now, remember that when building your home based Internet business, speed vs. stamina should be taken into account when making plans and setting goals.
