I was reviewing some files this weekend when I came across a particular article in the series that I send out to my Home Internet Business Tips Newsletter subscribers. The article highlights several words that are simple to use and can act as powerful motivators in your advertising and sales copy.

Of course, the object of an ad or any kind of promotional piece is to move the prospect to take some form of action. Here are some effective words to think about:

- Fast: People today want fast results, fast ordering, fast delivery.

- Guaranteed: People want to be assured they're not risking their hard-earned money when buying your product or service.

- Limited: People want to own or receive things that are exclusive or rare. These things are considered to be more valuable.

- Easy/Simple: People want easy ordering, easy payment; they want to know it is simple to use, comes with simple instructions.

- Testimonial: People want to see believable proof before they purchase your product. Testimonials should be specific and reputable.

- Discount/Sale: People want bargains, plain and simple. It could be rebates, one-time sales, percentage offers, get-one-free offers.

- Free: People respond well to the offer of free incentives. This lets them check the quality of your products. Free incentives could be free books, accessories or services.

- You/Your: The use of "you" and "your" helps to personalize your message, making the prospect feel like you are talking directly to them. That makes some people feel more important and it motivates them to read through your entire ad or sales copy.

- Important: People do not want to miss important information that could affect their life. When they see the word "important" they will take notice.

- New: People want new products or services that will improve their life, like new information, new technology, new results.

You may hear of other words with the power to give some extra punch to your ads and sales copy. Add them to this list and be sure to keep them ALL close at hand for whenever you need words that WORK for you.

There is something successful people do that unsuccessful people are not willing to do. Successful people pay the price for success.

Suppose you want a fancier car or a bigger home or a long, luxurious vacation. Chances are, to get these things you will need to earn more money than you are presently earning. That means you will have to do something different from this day forward to earn the extra money you need to get the things you want.

Basically, if you want to earn more, you have to learn more. That means you will need to develop some new skills. And that is often the roadblock that separates the average person from the successful.

Successful people do what they have to in order to succeed. They are willing to pay the price.

Sometimes, paying the price means "short term pain for long term gain." You may have to invest some extra time and money into learning new skills. If you think the cost of education or training is beyond your present financial ability, think again.

The fact is you may simply have to adjust your current spending habits. If you do this with purpose, the pain will be minimal, perhaps nonexistent.

After all, investing in personal development is a smart thing to do. The reason it is worth the effort to re-assess your spending habits to see where you can put a few of your dollars to better use is because by doing so, it can move you into the above average bracket for earning potential.

Recently, I found a great exercise to help a person perform this valuable assessment. It is called the "EVE Ratio" and you use it to compare what you spend on entertainment versus what you spend on training and personal development. It is an eye-opener.

Your EVE Ratio will show you how a small change in your spending habits could easily free up extra dollars that should be going towards personal development. The exercise is simple and takes just a few minutes.

Mary posted a question in the Entrepreneur Forums at EvanCarmichael.com asking forum members who or what inspired them to get into sales and marketing. I posted a response there, then decided I would post it here, too, with additional notes and information. Why not? It's all part of my personal story.

It seems I have always been interested in sales and marketing, although I didn't start seriously developing my skills until I was in my 30s.

It all started when I was about 12 or 13 and a friend and I set up a Kool-Aid stand one summer. We made some good sales, but I'm sure we probably ended up being our own best customers!

After that, I began noticing all those advertisements in comic books enticing kids with visions of making easy money selling garden seeds. I was interested, but since I was Canadian and the ads all had United States addresses, I never followed through. Today, distance and the international border mean nothing, but "way back then," the U.S.of A was a faraway, foreign land. It seemed that way to a kid, anyway.

In my early 20s, I became intrigued by all the mail-order business ads in magazines. The first training book I ever bought was called Plan For Mail Order Profits (revised edition), by David G. Baron, copyright 1975, Executive Business Institute. I seldom look at it now (except when writing about it in blogs and forums), but I still have it sitting handy on my business bookshelf.

Another notable entrepreneur who inspired me was self-made millionaire E. Joseph Cossman. Although I did later pick up one of his marketing manuals (How to Make More Money in Your Own Business), I first learned of him from his marketing infomercials on television in the 80s.

In those infomercials, one of Cossman's most notable students was Bob Hall of Ontario, Canada, who had become known as the Wheelbarrow King of North America. Bob acquired the domestic marketing rights to a line of wheelbarrows from a foreign supplier and achieved great success.

Eventually, I met Bob in person. We worked together in the mid-90s promoting JewelWay International, a popular network marketing company of the day. We enjoyed success for a few years until JewelWay went the way that so many networking companies seem to go.

By that time, I had become an avid student of personal development books and audio programs. After reading Napoleon Hill and Dale Carnegie in the 80s, I was introduced to the inspirational and motivational works of Earl Nightingale, Anthony Robbins, Stephen R. Covey and Brian Tracy.

As a leading authority on personal and professional development, Brian Tracy remains the source I most often turn to first for entrepreneurial inspiration and motivation.

It was no surprise that when the opportunity presented itself in March, I became an affiliate for Brian Tracy products and started promoting them on my StarrBizz.com website.

For most of us, when we first begin marketing on the Internet we expect immediate success. We launch a website, start a blog, join a few forums and social sites and do some intense advertising, then wait for the world to beat a path to our door.

When the anticipated parade fails to materialize, we fret and start to question our methods and our goals. However, wise marketers come to realize that this is just a natural process of business development. The secret to online success is, most typically, not how fast you leave the starting gate but how much stamina you have to stay the course.

An example of this principle and a good role model is the tortoise in the famous fable about the Tortoise and the Hare. The tortoise stayed focused and determined, maintained a steady pace and went on to win the race. He did not let his own obvious limitations or the apparent advantages of his competition deter him. Anything is possible if you stay focused and determined.

Success, recognition and rewards may take time but if you stay the course, you will eventually enjoy the rewards of entrepreneurial dedication.

I am a member of several popular online business and marketing forums and I have just achieved a significant milestone with one of them - the Entrepreneur Forums at EvanCarmichael.com. A few days ago, I logged my 1,000th post there.

I joined the Entrepreneur Forums in August, 2008, less than a year ago, at the prompting of active and inspirational fellow online marketer, David Hurley. I have remained active on almost a daily basis because of the variety of topics discussed in the forum and the variety of members who participate.

Of course, site owner Evan Carmichael also sponsors a great incentive to participate in the forums in the form of monthly prizes, of which I have been the happy recipient on a few occasions.

Aside from the prizes, I think the attitude of many of the Entrepreneur Forums members can be summed up in a recent forum comment made by another fellow marketer and forum member, Tanny Lahav:

"I do it because I enjoy it. If I don't enjoy it, I won't do it. As a home business owner, it is hard to do the non-fun things, and if you want things done, you must sit and do them. However, there are things, like forums, that are fun to do and it is the first thing I do when I get back home from work."

I agree with Tanny. If the forum experience wasn't enjoyable and if I didn't get the value of information, insight and inspiration from fellow forum members that I do, I wouldn't stick around and wouldn't have achieved my 1,000-post milestone.

Entrepreneur rewards go beyond the basic information and immediate camaraderie of forum participation. Not only have my forum signature, avatar photo and forum profile link helped develop my presence and reputation as a steady online marketer, but as a result other marketers more readily recommend me to associates within their circles of influence.

Besides marketing forums, there are other Social Networking groups where it also pays to demonstrate the stalwart focus and determination of the tortoise, as mentioned earlier.

Whether in forums or other groups, if you stick with your marketing focus and prove yourself over time, other opportunities will tend to present themselves; partnerships and joint venture opportunities are sure to follow.

Entrepreneur rewards may include personal or business connections, rewards of recognition, or direct financial rewards, but the point of this post is that it seldom happens overnight. You must first put in the time and the effort - the sweat, the toil and sometimes the tears - before you achieve the desired results. When they do happen, the rewards are well worth it.
