People get involved with Internet Marketing for a variety of reasons. When they first start, they are often met with an overwhelming avalanche of information: what programs to promote, what resources to use, how to set up a home based web biz for maximum success.

Faced with this mountain of decision-making, it is tough for a web biz "newbie" to know what is important and how to prioritize.

To simplify things, the basics of starting and building a successful web biz can be boiled down to four simple elements:

1 - You need a website
2 - You need an autoresponder
3 - You need a blog
4 - You need a payment processing tool

Website
To market effectively on the Internet, you need a website. And to give you complete control over your marketing, you need to have your own website: for example, your-business-name.com.

Yes, you can get free websites from the affiliate programs you promote, but then your marketing focus is limited and at the complete mercy of the affiliate company that is providing you with the free website.

Web hosting is so cheap these days and tools to create and modify a website so easily accessible, there is no excuse not to register a domain name and set up your own marketing website. It just makes sense. Look at it this way: if you are planning for the future, you might as well start off on the right foot.

Autoresponder
Most visitors to your website will not purchase anything. That is why you need an autoresponder service; so you can collect, store and manage the names and email addresses of interested prospects for future follow-up.

You must give your visitors a good reason to provide you with their name and email address. You might offer a free newsletter subscription or a marketing course or eBooks related to the theme of your online business.

Once set up, your autoresponder will administer the process automatically. Your prospect fills out an online form; the autoresponder adds them to your mailing list; the product or subscription or whatever gets delivered automatically; and from time to time, you send out additional offers and information.

Web Biz Blog
The purpose of a blog is to provide visitors with information relative to your business and to help promote your products and services. A blog allows you to interact with your prospects and it can be a good way to demonstrate the value and range of your insight and experience so people will be more interested in opting in to your email list.

Blogs also win favour with the search engines because you can add fresh content quickly and easily on a regular basis. Search engine popularity can translate into more traffic to your website.

Most home based web biz newbies start off with text based blogs that include a few graphics and banners. As you become experienced, you can add such social media tools as audio, video, and online polls.

Payment Processing
The object of business is to sell products and services. You will need a payment processing tool to collect money when you make a sale. Although research will reveal other options, PayPal remains as a popular payment processor.

Whether you use PayPal or another processing tool, what you do is place pay buttons on your web pages by adding a small amount of code provided by the payment processing service.

A good processing service will give customers several payment methods to choose from; for example, debit or a choice of charge cards.

These four elements are the starting point for every successful home based Internet business. Once these tools are properly in place, you can then focus on the next stage of building your business: effective marketing and promotion to drive traffic to your website.

Thanks to my friends at EvanCarmichael.com, I was recently given a unique honour: I was featured on the YoungEntrepreneur.com blog.

The YoungEntrepreneur.com website was founded by the entrepreneurial team of brothers Matthew and Adam Toren, two young men who epitomize the entrepreneurial spirit.

The YoungEntrepreneur.com blog is managed by Evan Carmichael, another shining example of inspiring entrepreneurship.

I have been an active member of the EvanCarmichael.com Entrepreneur Forums on Evan's website since August of 2008 after being referred there by Internet Marketing associate and friend, David Hurley.

Online business and marketing forums offer one more avenue for effective Social Networking. In many respects, I am still a novice when it comes to Social Networking, but the Entrepreneur Forums are one social site that I visit daily for information, inspiration and to connect on a more personal basis with other entrepreneurs.

In my opinion and experience, a key to success with online forums in particular and Social Networking sites in general is to become active as a regular, contributing member. Do not simply show up to promote your products, programs, services and links; be sure to include a respectful blend of helpful, insightful information, recommendations and opinions as well.

We all know that the purpose of business and marketing is to generate sales. However, while forums and social sites can be a source of paying customers, we, as savvy entrepreneurs, should recognize the greater value these sites hold for us. Forums and Social Networking sites should be viewed as powerful tools to leverage our presence and our reach beyond what simple promotion might achieve.

When you take time to develop the respect of other members of your chosen forum(s) or social site(s) they will be more likely to recommend you to others within their circles of influence. The amazing Twitter Social Networking site is a perfect case in point.

Let's say you have developed a following on Twitter of 1,000 members - that is, other Twitter members who have chosen to follow your Twitter posts (called "tweets"). Each tweet you post will potentially be seen by your 1,000 followers.

Suppose you become known by your followers as a person who posts highly informative, insightful, helpful tweets. (Not just links and promos for your own stuff.) What will happen is some of your followers will then "re-tweet" your posts. That is, they will copy your tweets and re-tweet them so that all of THEIR followers could potentially see them.

Now, suppose just 100 of your followers do this and each of them have 1,000 of their own followers on Twitter; your reach has just expanded from 1,000 to 100,000. Do you see the potential?

Forums like the EvanCarmichael.com Entrepreneur Forums and blogs like the YoungEntrepreneur.com blog can work in a similar way; members and visitors who like what they see about you will then refer either the respective forum post, blog post or your website to others. This leverages your reach and expands your prospect base.

But first, you have to give members and owners of forums, social sites and business blogs a reason to want to promote or profile you.

In my case, I've been quite active in the EvanCarmichael.com Entrepreneur Forums since last summer and as a result, Marketing Manager Kevin Lee recommended me to site owner Evan Carmichael who, in turn, submitted my information to be featured in the YoungEntrepreneur.com blog!

Again, I feel honoured. It was not a form of recognition I was expecting or had in any way been aiming for. It came as a complete surprise. I present it today as an excellent personal example of Social Networking for web biz success.

I've been a member of the Twitter social networking site for several weeks now and the experience keeps getting better and better!

Social networking has become such a vital part of every home based web biz marketer's game plan and Twitter has developed into a leading force in social networking.

The biggest benefit of social networking is that it is free; you can reach thousands of prospects easily and economically. The challenge of social networking is that you have to spend time developing your presence on a social media site and time developing relationships of trust.

Twitter definitely simplifies the process. Sign-up and set-up take a matter of minutes. Then all you do is begin posting your "tweets" in 140 characters or less. You can post as often as you like, but the secret to social networking success is to offer info, insight and value, not just blatant promos or ads for your products and services.

You will find that once you become active in posting tweets, Twitter members will automatically start following you. And that is the object of social networking; to build a list of followers.

There are a few techniques to build your followers faster. One way is to follow other members. It's easy to do on Twitter - just a click of the button - and most members you follow will follow you back.

As your list of followers grows, it becomes even more important to create a balance between informative tweets and promotional tweets.

Also, it helps to keep your tweets relative to your basic theme. For example, I try to keep the majority of my gtbulmer tweets focused on the theme of business and online marketing. I try to keep the majority of my ThinkGreen4Life tweets focused on the theme of the environment and going green.

If your tweets depart too far afield of the theme that attracted your followers, some will un-follow you, and on Twitter, it's just as easy to un-follow as it is to follow.

Another way to help build your followers is to "re-tweet" the posts of other members. Basically, you click the "reply" icon to paste their twitter ID into your comment field; you type in the letters "RT" (meaning re-tweet), then copy and paste the portion of their text that you want to re-tweet. After making sure it is 140 characters or less, you then click the "update" button to post the re-tweet.

When you re-tweet the comments of other members, they appreciate it and will likely pay more attention to your tweets. Also, they might return the favour and re-tweet some of your tweets. There is a HUGE advantage to this: when they re-tweet your tweets, their ENTIRE list of followers could potentially see your messages. There are two key benefits to this:

- First, you instantly multiply your exposure to members you might otherwise never reach.

- Second, when one member re-tweets another, many of their followers begin following the member who has just been re-tweeted.

With that in mind, I actively watch for tweets that I think my followers will be interested in, then re-tweet those tweets. It's one more way I can provide service and value to members of my growing social network on Twitter.

After just a few weeks as a member of Twitter, I have developed a nice following and I am following many informative and inspirational members. Not only have I been learning a great deal on a variety of topics, but I've been finding some great links to share with friends on other social networking sites.

If you are looking to build your home based web biz or advance any form of business or Internet Marketing that you may be involved in, I recommend you consider the value of Social Networking with Twitter.

Long URLs can be a pain to work with. Here are two URL shorteners that I recommend.

I don't know about you, but personally I think long URLs look ugly and unprofessional and sometimes they just cause problems because of their length.

There may be circumstances where long URLs are not so obvious and are therefore acceptable. But in places where your customers, prospects or readers do see the URL, a short URL takes up less space and in my opinion, looks much nicer.

There are many URL shorteners on the market. Here are two that I recommend:

1) Turn your long URL into a nuURL with just one click!

Just as the headline suggests, nuURL is quick and easy and best of all, it's free! If you would also like to track your hits, create custom links and add descriptions, simply register at the nuURL site and you will be able to do those things.

Now, suppose I wanted to tell you about a news story or an informative article on a website. The URL to the page could be quite long. For example, the one below is 87 characters. Some links are even longer.

http://www.thinkgreen4life.com/environmental/environmental-changes-can-affect-everyone/

Using nuURL, I shortenened this 87-character URL down to just 21 characters:

http://nuurl.us/8495e

Visit nuURL right now - nuURL - and try it. Bookmark the page into your "favourites" so you can find it easily when you need it.

2) Make long URLs usable! Create a tiny URL that will not break in email postings.

TinyURL.com will shorten your URL quickly, easily and without any cost. Use the random URL created by TinyURL or create a custom URL of your own choosing.

Using TinyURL, I turned this long URL:

http://www.thinkgreen4life.com/environmental/environmental-changes-can-affect-everyone/

...into this:

http://tinyurl.com/dxt5ka

It can be very handy to shorten a long URL; on the Social Networking site, Twitter, for example. On Twitter, you only have 140 characters to work with. You don't want to use them all up with a long URL. It's true, Twitter will automatically shorten your long URLs, but only after you enter the long URL and use up all your characters.

Use one of the URL shorteners I have recommended FIRST, then paste the shortened URL into Twitter and you will have plenty of room to post other text.

URL shorteners can help make your posts look much more appealing and professional, whether you post on Twitter, in emails, blogs articles or wherever. Check out nuURL and TinyURL today!

I'm a "do-it-yourself" kind of guy, even though I should be outsourcing things. While trying to squeeze some time in to practice making banners and graphics for my home based web biz I found this really cool tool that lets you enjoy some photo fun for your web biz.

The website is called JPGfun.com. You can use it to create interesting, unique or humorous images for your, blog, social sites or whatever.

What you do is upload any photo of your choice from your computer, then choose from a selection of frames, effects and magazine covers and insert your photo. The whole process takes only a couple of minutes - faster, once you know what you are doing.

Once your photo has been "adjusted," if you want you can copy the image html directly from the site. Or you can do what I did:

- Create the image
- Save it to your computer
- Upload it to your website server and use that as your image URL

I didn't spend a lot of time experimenting with this resource; just wanted to test the tool to make sure it truly was simple and quick so I could recommend it to you.

It took me about four minutes to create and save five different graphics. You will see one of them below. It's a "cute" one that I particularly like.

To do something similar, simply click the JPGfun.com link, go to the site and let your creativity run wild!

Go ahead - have some photo fun. Make yourself (or a friend) a star!

There is no doubt about it; Social Networking is "the big thing" these days. Everybody has their favourite Social Networking sites and preferred methods of social marketing.
