Newcomers to home based Internet marketing always have a bit of a challenge getting their home business set up. So much to learn. So much to do. So many tools and resources to research and decide on.

There are a few basics; a few "must haves" and we all have our favourites.

Leading the list of home business resources is the need to have your own website. If you want to market online, you simply have to have your own website. Affiliate sites are fine for basic selling, but you need to create your own unique identity and you need to have "creative control" over the website content and design and, of course, your marketing future.

For me, Host4Profit has been serving my needs. I have been very happy with their hosting package and their support services.

Host4Profit offers an affiliate program. It is also available through the Plug-In Profit Site program.

HostGator is another provider of web hosting services. HostGator is economical and provides everything from basic site hosting to Reseller web hosting, dedicated server hosting and free web hosting to qualifying non-profit organizations.

An affiliate program is available with HostGator. Additionally, it is part of the Plug-In Profit Site program.

As a home based Internet marketer, you need products and services to sell. You will find a variety of products and services throughout the Internet. Many marketers look to ClickBank.com for commissionable items to sell.

Another great source providing a range of products and services is the SFI Marketing Group. Between their 7,000-plus item catalog, TripleClicks (their new international superstore) and the newly updated and simplified SFI 3.0 Maximum Income Plan, SFI has strengthened their position as a leading online affiliate marketing program.

SFI is included in the portfolio of affiliate programs included with the Plug-In Profit Site plan.

Once you have a website and a selection of products and services to promote, you will want to make sure your site is optimized for the search engines to maximize its potential in the SERPs (search engine results pages). Your aim is to land your web pages, blogs and articles on the first page of the SERPS.

The best way to assure a higher search engine rank is to follow recognized SEO (search engine optimization) practices. The best SEO resource that I have found for home business is Suzanne Morrison's 3 Steps to Search Engine Success eBook. This eBook simplifies the process and presents it in words easy to understand and follow.

Thanks to Suzanne's recommendations, my website, blog posts and articles consistently appear on the first pages of search results for many of my chosen keyword phrases.

Talking about blog posts, articles and website content, one source I use for content information and inspiration is InfoGoRound.

InfoGoRound (IGR) provides thousands of top quality private label articles and information products in a wide range of both general and niche categories. The service also includes online software to help you generate instant newsletters and training courses using IGR content.

While you are working on creating and distributing web content to help promote your website and products and attract visitors to your website, you will want to find out what methods and means other marketers use make their business a success. Social Networking is another resource of great value to your home based business.

I am a big advocate of online business and marketing forums. A couple of my favourites include:

- Conquer Your Niche

- Evan Carmichael Entrepreneur Forums

- Plug-In Profit Site Support Group inside the Warrior Forum

In addition to business and marketing forums, there are also numerous Social Networking sites to take part in.

Currently, I spend time every day at Twitter where members post short, but frequent "tweets" to keep each other up to date with their ongoing activity. To help build my Twitter following faster, I use the TweeterGetter service.

The last resource I will mention today is training and mentorship support. If you try to do it all yourself, online marketing can be a long process of trial and error. To speed it up, you can follow the lead of experienced marketers.

I recommend the Niche Power Group (NPG) for personalized, hands-on Internet Marketing mentorship. Membership in the NPG includes access to training guides, marketing resources and personal guidance from a team of successful mentors.

As some loyal Web Bizz Blog readers know, I joined the Twitter community recently. On Twitter, members post short quips or "tweets" as they are called. The idea is to keep your friends and contacts updated with what you are doing through the day.

Members share many great ideas on an unlimited variety of topics.

This morning, Twitter member Kevin Rose posted a tweet noting that Haagen Dazs sent Twitter member Digg a case of ice cream for tweeting about them!

That got me thinking. There are MANY great companies out there that deserve a little extra recognition ... not that I would expect anything for "helping them out." (wink, wink)

There is a difference between mentoring, leading and simply delegating. Each of these leadership styles can motivate people and get results, but for maximum effectiveness, the style you choose must fit the purpose.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Our chief want in life is somebody who will make us do what we can."

Like it or not, we as a people are typically "followers." Even if we don't like to admit it, we seek leadership. And that is okay. There are many benefits to "following the leader." It saves time and energy and can quite effectively accelerate our progress.

But there are times when we are called upon to take a leadership role. There are times when we desire to take a leadership role. When we do, if we want to win the respect of those we lead, we must first respect them.

- When you delegate, you are basically saying, "This is my project. This is my vision. You do it this way. It's my way or the highway."

Effective delegators are usually a little more respectful and less direct than that, but that is the essence of delegating. You might try to match talents to tasks, but the bottom line is just getting the thing done.

- Effective leaders take delegation a step further. They DO try to match talents to tasks and they look for ways to encourage those they lead so the followers experience a positive sense of achievement and value in their tasks.

With leadership, it's not just about getting things done, or just about a goal or a vision. It's also about building strength in an organization by building strength in the individual.

- Mentorship has a whole different focus than delegating or leading. The focus of mentorship is to identify what is best for the person being mentored, then direct that person's actions towards those activities. It's more than matching talents to tasks and more than building strength in the individual for the greater good of an organization or a cause.

Mentorship is all about the individual - the mentee. I have seen leaders and delegators who deceive even themselves into thinking they are "mentors" but when you examine their style, you see their efforts are focused on either personal goals, or on personal vision for the group or organization they represent or promote.

True mentorship involves putting aside all interests other than what best serves the mentee from the perspective of the mentee.

There is a time and a place for each leadership style, be it mentoring, leading or delegating. To respect all parties and to achieve the desired results, the proper leadership style must be matched up with the appropriate situation.

It's not a new Social Networking phenomenon by any means, but still, there are many home based Internet business marketers who have not yet discovered the ease and benefit of using Twitter tweets to network with others.

I was slow to get on the Twitter bandwagon, but yesterday, at the prompting of Cynthia Minnaar, one of my web biz marketing mentors, I finally checked it out and was amazed at how easy it is and how little time it takes to use this social networking service.

It takes just a few minutes to sign up and log in for the first time. Another couple of minutes and you have your user profile and homepage settings all set up. And in one more minute, you can have your first Twitter tweet posted! That's it. You're done. Move on to other marketing tasks.

It really is that simple. There is virtually no learning curve, like there is with some social networking sites that take an hour to set up, then who knows how long to read through tutorials and FAQs to learn how to do everything the "right way."

The premise of Twitter is that you check in frequently throughout the day and simply post quick comments telling your Twitter followers what you are up to at the moment. The system allows comments of not more than 140 characters long - that's about 20 words or less.

While there, you have a quick look at what other Twitter members who you are following are doing. You're in. You're out. You're on to other things.

Many home based Internet business marketers are using Twitter to build up a bigger base of business contacts and marketing prospects.

You attract followers with short, informative or helpful posts and you follow other members and work at developing mutual business relationships with them. It is recommended to try to keep the number of members you are following around the same as those who are following you. This sort of balance shows you are an active member of the community.

To create a positive image for yourself on Twitter, be sure to personalize your homepage. Select an attractive background and upload your photo. Again, this takes less than a minute to do; it's very easy.

Let "The King" inspire you to greater home based Internet business success.

Last night, my spouse and I attended a "Gospel Elvis" concert and dinner. For the past 15 years, entertainer Leland Johnson has been transforming into the likeness of Elvis (the King of Rock and Roll), and travelling far and wide spreading the Gospel message of Jesus Christ (the spiritual King).

When you see Leland out of costume, he looks absolutely nothing like Elvis Presley. Once he dons the Elvis wig, dark glasses and custom designed Elvis suits, he begins to take on the King's persona. And when he speaks or sings, his vocal presentation completes the transformation. It is amazing.

It made me think about our efforts and intentions to be successful as home based web biz marketers:

==> Do we have our Elvis suits on?

Do we throw together a website, monetize it a bit, promote it with a blog, then hope it looks enough like a real business to attract customers and sales?

Or do we take our online web biz serious? Do we research it properly to transform it from marketing imposter, to respectable impersonator, to unique presence in its own right?

Leland pays from $1,700 to $3,000 for his custom Gospel Elvis suits. He could easily just put on the wig and glasses and a cheap costume and still impress the crowd with his vocal ability. But he has chosen to go the whole nine yards with his performance.

Leland has studied the King's mannerisms and on-stage actions. He has perfected and duplicated Elvis's unique vocal tone and style. And to complete the impersonation, he pays to get authentic Elvis suits made.

Beyond that, Leland has rewritten many of the lyrics in recognized Elvis tunes to represent spiritual themes to help him deliver the Gospel message. He has copied the proven popular style, but he has given it his own unique touch.

Home based Internet Marketing can work the same.

You can learn the style and tested techniques from others. You can build on their experience and strengths. And you can add your own touches to create your own unique marketing presence or personality.

As Gospel Elvis, Leland Johnson is convincing because he is committed to creating and presenting a professionally accurate image. Because of this, his audiences pay attention to the message he delivers during his performances. He looks the part, plays the part, delivers on their expectations and thus wins their confidence.

When you read web biz reviews of home based Internet business opportunities you have to take into account the possible biases of the reviewer. Remember, a review is just one person's opinion. You should research and add your own perspective.

I read recently in a popular online business and marketing forum where a member questioned the value and dependability of web biz reviews. The member suggested that web biz reviewers can potentially be biased in favour of the Internet business opportunity they are reviewing.

I had to agree with the forum member. It is only natural that the tone and focus of a review will be influenced by the degree of experience or connection the reviewer has to the web biz marketing opportunity.

For example, if you had a bad experience with the opportunity, of course your review will be weighted towards the negative side. If you had a great experience, or if you "happen" to be an active affiliate for the opportunity, your web biz review will likely lean towards the favourable.

In some instances, even an active, enthusiastic affiliate will provide a non-partial review, offering information and unbiased insight into the pros and cons of a particular opportunity or product.

And in some cases, a web biz reviewer may be totally non-partisan, if doing regular web biz reviews is their focus or one of the benefits they offer to their targeted customers.

Even so, anytime you read a web biz review you should accept it as information only, not as the final authority on the value - whether plus OR minus - of the opportunity or product that is being reviewed.

Web biz reviews should be used as just one resource, or one step in your process of research when considering an opportunity. What you really must do is determine specifically what your needs and interests are, then line them up against the features and benefits of the opportunity.

If you want to read reviews to get a feel for what others are saying about the opportunity, that is great, but consider carefully what is being said in the reviews. Compare those statements to what is said on the company website or in the marketing materials and compare the statements in one review against those in another review.

You can use web biz reviews as a guide in your home based Internet business research, but YOU should be the final authority in the decision-making process. Do your due diligence to determine what is truly best for you.

Natural traffic from the search engines can produce excellent results but you have to be diligent in your keyword research to effectively position your site to attract search engine traffic.

Keywords and keyword phrases are the words that people enter into an Internet search engine to help find what they are looking for online. The search engine then returns a list of websites that contain the keyword or phrase that has been entered.

Your aim is to get your web biz website on the first page of the search results because most people click only on a few links on the first page and seldom look any further. The higher search engine rank you can achieve, the better.

Web biz sites that have been effectively optimized for particular keyword phrases stand a better chance of showing up on the first page of the search results. There are several steps to effective search engine optimization (SEO). Keyword research is the first step.

In the SEO eBook by Suzanne Morrison - 3 Steps to Search Engine Success - three important criteria are given to guide your keyword research:

- Select keyword phrases that are relevant to your target market and your website; don't disappoint or discourage your visitors by attracting them with a keyword phrase that is not supported by related content on your site. Do that and you will lose them fast.

- Research and choose keywords that get a good number of searches per month. Achieving a higher search engine rank only helps you if it is a keyword that people are actually searching for.

- Find keyword phrases that are not overwhelmed by competition. You need to know that you have a reasonable chance of ranking well for your keyword phrase. Otherwise, you may not achieve the desired result.

Web biz tools are available online to help with effective keyword research. Wordtracker is a paid service, but a trial offer is available to test it out. Google Adwords Keyword Tool is a free service.

After selecting a keyword phrase that is relevant to your market and your site and that has a good number of searches each month, type it into the Google search engine and check out the sites that are returned on the first page of the results.

Use the MarketLeap.com Link Popularity Checker to check how many backlinks your site has compared to what the leading websites have. Can you compete? Will you be able to build up enough web biz backlinks to make a run for that first page search engine rank?

How well optimized are the leading websites? Have they used their keywords in the page title, the page headline and throughout the text of the site? Can you do better in this area?

Attention to these details when doing your keyword research will help you make better choices.

As mentioned, there is more to search engine optimization than keyword research, but keyword research definitely needs to be your starting point. If you hope to achieve higher search engine rank, this is a step that you must pay particular attention to.

Since I was a kid, I've always been attracted to the prospect of "selling things." I just like the idea of matching people up with the things they want or need, then earning a commission for doing it. Getting into the web biz was a natural for me.

Of course, it helps that I enjoy writing and that I am a bit of an enthusiastic promoter. That's what online marketing is all about. You need to create appealing advertising copy and you need to present your web biz products and services in their best light.

There are many ways to make money online, too. You can sell tech products and services, books and eBooks, personal care, weight loss, home care, insurance, music and much, much more. The list is endless. If you have ever wondered what sells online, well, pretty much anything sells online if you market it well, provide competitive prices and dependable service.

Most affiliate companies have excellent ordering systems that look after your customers. It helps make the web biz both easy and profitable for you. You do the advertising and promoting and they take care of the payment processing and product delivery or shipping.

If you are marketing your own products and services, there are many tools and resources readily available online to help you quickly set up your own e-commerce website.

This year, I am researching potential niche markets and will identify and choose one to become my major focus and I will begin promoting it with enthusiasm using all the methods I've been learning and practicing up until now.

Web Biz marketing is like any other form of business. It takes effort, focus and determination.

The only home based Internet marketers who are truly making money online are those who stick with an idea, learn everything they can about it, apply everything they learn, then stay focused until it is pulling in the dough.

If you don't give it everything you've got and stick with it until it starts to pay, you're just wasting your time and your money. If you feel motivated to "cut your losses" and quit, chances are you haven't been doing the right things, or you haven't been doing them long enough.

Here are two examples using my experiences with blogging and with keyword testing.

It took me just about a full year of steady blogging about tested web biz opportunities before my Web Bizz Blog got indexed by Google. I am sure there were things I could have done to speed up the indexing process, but all I was focusing on at that time was posting new content to my blog every few days or so.

I was about to give up on ever seeing my blog indexed. I was convinced there was something wrong with my blog format that was preventing it from getting indexed. I was already thinking about leaving this web biz blog and starting a new one with a different format.

Then one day I noticed it had finally been indexed! Yippee! Now, when I apply SEO (search engine optimization) effectively, some of my Web Bizz Blog posts are turning up on the first page of the SERPs (search engine results pages). Ain't tested web biz marketing methods grand?

Keywords are another story. It seemed to take forever before I started seeing my StarrBizz.com homepage, inner pages and blog pages turn up on the first pages of the search engine results. Still, I kept working at the various SEO techniques I have been learning from my home biz marketing mentors.

I could have quit at any time. I could have walked away from my investment of time and money, frustrated and discouraged. But I didn't. I kept the faith and kept plugging along. And then, the results began to materialize and my commitment and determination were rewarded.

The real secret to my success is researching and finding a few tested web biz opportunities, learning from online business marketers with experience, and sticking with what they recommend until results begin to show. You can choose to chase rainbows, or you can focus on your chosen web biz opportunity and make it work.
