It is easy to say what sells online: basically anything and everything!

Long before the Internet was introduced, someone once said that you could nail two boards together that have never been nailed together before and somebody somewhere would buy it! That is true on the Internet, too.

But the question is, what sells the BEST online?

Whether or not they are all great sellers, we all know that product choices are endless. You can sell:

- Books and Magazines, both print and electronic

- Tech Services like Internet, Telephone and Wireless for home and business

- Wellness and Weight Loss products

- Natural Cleaning products

- Personal Care

- Groceries and Home Care

In the article What Sells Best on the Internet, written by Lou Hirsh for E-Commerce Times, GartnerG2 research director Brian Smith is quoted as saying "The things that sell best online are products that have the least surprise and the least variability."

Books and music, said Smith, are the top-selling items "by a landslide." This is because buyers know what they are getting and the items are easy to ship.

Online sellers that offer comparison-shopping services often experience greater success than those that don't, Smith also noted, citing online car-buying sites as an example.

Drop-Shipping Your Way To Online Selling Success

The great thing about finding products and services to sell online is that as a home business entrepreneur, you don't have to inventory and ship the products yourself. Many online companies are looking for independent home-based marketers to do the advertising and selling while the company handles the order processing and shipping.

Books and music may be the hottest sellers online right now, but as online services and distribution processes improve, more and more products will enter the popularity pipeline.

One rule of thumb that I have always found helpful when choosing products to sell, online or offline, is to choose items you believe in and feel comfortable with. If you can't be excited about a product you are selling, you won't be able to promote it effectively.

To review what sells best online, here is a checklist:

- Books and Music are hot right now because buyers know what they are getting and shipping is easy.

- Comparison Shopping: Allow your prospective buyers to do a little comparison-shopping and show them why your product is the better choice.

- Items that offer style or feature choices will sell well. Buyers love choices.

- Choose items that are easy to demonstrate or explain online and that are easy to package and ship.

- Look into items that you feel comfortable promoting and selling. You will enjoy greater success selling items that excite YOU.

Here's a neat little feature free from Google: add a Customized Search Bar to your web site so your visitors can search your site for relevant information and links. It's one more way to highlight your own Internet Home Business ideas and opportunities.

It's really quite easy to add a customized Google Search Bar to your web site and your visitors might find it useful. You can set it up to search only your site, or to search the entire Internet like a regular search engine.

Imagine your visitors typing in your keyword phrase - like Internet home business - and returning search results with ONLY your links and web pages! It's really cool to see it.

Or, they may be looking for a specific program or product or service: your Google Custom Search Engine will return relevant results from all pages on your web site.

I am not technically savvy, but Google makes it easy to customize a personal search engine: you choose various features, including who can use it as well as the look of the search bar and certain design elements of the results page.

My biggest problem is deciding where I want it on my home page. It's still new to me, so I am still experimenting with it. My home page and my site in general are a work in progress anyway, so we'll see how it all develops.

To get your own Google Custom Search Engine, go to Google Custom Search, sign in and follow the steps. Google walks you through it and for the most part, it is fairly well explained and not too difficult to follow and apply.

Once you have set it all up (it takes only minutes), you will then click on the link to get the necessary code to add to your web site. Once the code has been installed and the changes uploaded to your web site, you are ready to roll!

Personally, I think a Google Custom Search Engine can be a beneficial resource to have on your site. Not every visitor will use it, but it will be handy for those who want to. It is also a unique feature that gives your visitors something interesting to try out and one more reason to stick around your web site a bit longer.

When I was new to online marketing, I had a tough time keeping up with all the jargon - all the words and phrases and industry references that everybody under the sun seemed to know and understand but me!

SEO was the first Internet Marketing acronym to cause me grief and embarrassment in the online marketing forums.

I could tell that SEO was something extremely important by how often it came up in forum comments and by the way most marketers enthusiastically emphasized how critical SEO was to the success of any online business and how effective it was in producing results for them.

But everybody called it "SEO" and I didn't know what it was or how to do it. Finally, I had to ask, and again, that was embarrassing because I seemed to be the only one who didn't know what SEO stood for.

If I had been smart - and a little more Internet-savvy - I would have simply done an Internet search for the term. Then I would have quickly found out that SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and the search would also have produced some excellent insight into what SEO was and how to do it effectively.

Everybody has their own way to describe SEO. You could write a book on the subject. Wait a minute - many books HAVE been written on the subject! In addition to the basic principles of SEO, there are also some ongoing debates regarding the best applications as well as some of the evolving techniques of SEO.

SEO - Search Engine Optimization

Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, describes Search Engine Optimization as "the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via 'natural' ('organic' or 'algorithmic') search results. Usually, the earlier the site is presented in the search results, the more searchers will visit that site."

The Wikipedia listing goes on to say, "Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines."

The listing also says, "The term 'search engine friendly' may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems and shopping carts that are easy to optimize."

Personal SEO Experience

The most valuable SEO training that I have personally received has come from a group of mentors I have in the PIPS Power Group (For Plug-In Profit Site members). In particular, mentor Suzanne Morrison who provides PPG members with a free SEO guide titled, 10 Ways to Improve Your Search Engine Ranking.

I refer to this guide regularly as I work towards optimizing my StarrBizz.com web site and I see immediate results every time I consistently apply the recommended techniques.

I also visit several popular online marketing forums to pick up SEO tips and engage in discussion regarding current practices and techniques.

SEO - Search Engine Optimization - is an area of Internet Home Business marketing where I find that the more I learn, the more there is yet to learn! But the value and importance of SEO is unquestionable and every online marketer should make an effort to learn the basics, if nothing else.

Private Label Rights (PLR) Articles are a great resource for busy marketers too busy to write their own material for websites, blogs, eBooks, etc., but not every Internet Home Business marketer likes to use PLR. Here's how to use PLR to your advantage ... without actually using it!

I am a freelance writer and Internet Home Business enthusiast who has a very difficult time using material that other people have written. I prefer my own style. I trust my own writing.

When I first learned about Private Label Rights articles and related content, I was not interested. I knew that I had the skill and the confidence to research and write on virtually any topic that I wanted to, so why use something someone else had written?

I soon found out why a marketer would be willing to use Private Label content: Because busy marketers are often too busy to research and write the amount of material they need on a continuing basis to properly promote their online business!

In the beginning, the more I learned about marketing online, the more I came to realize the vital importance of blogging regularly, adding new content to your website home page regularly, adding new content to inside pages on your site regularly, and submitting articles to online directories regularly. That's a lot of writing for one person!

Even so, and as busy as I was trying to do everything to develop my Internet Home Business that my mentors recommended, I could not bring myself to actually use articles written by other people and call them my own. I knew it was a very common, highly widespread practice in the industry - nothing wrong with that as long as proper permissions are granted. But I couldn't do it.

Then, another factor entered the picture that caused me some degree of concern: there is quite a controversy among opposing parties as to the value of Private Label content. The concern revolves around "duplicate content."

If you get your PLR from a source that is making it available to the masses, that means the same PLR article you use could also be used by countless other marketers. And most sources of PLR content do make the material available to the masses.

On the other hand, if you pay to have articles written for you exclusively, or have a source that guarantees exclusivity, duplicate content is obviously not an issue.

Also, if all you need is content for a blog, website or whatever, and duplicate content is not a concern for you, then PLR is a great choice.

How to Avoid the Duplicate Content Controversy

I subscribe to the InfoGoRound.com Private Label Content service and here is how I use PLR without actually using it. You can do the same:

- Use it as inspiration for article ideas: read through the PLR titles for insight on what topics readers may be interested in

- Use it as resource material for articles you write in your own hand: read through several PLR articles on a particular topic and pick out the best parts to highlight and write about

- Pick out highlights or particular details in a PLR article, then do Internet searches to find additional insight on the topic to help round out the article

- Use a well-written PLR article as a style template for your own articles: notice how the PLR article has a clear introduction, several points of explanation in the body, then a clear wrap-up or closing comment that ties it all together. Follow that same format, but using your own words, descriptions, experiences, ideas, etc.

That is a brief outline of how I use Private Label Content without using the actual pre-written article.

Some marketers won't touch PLR with a ten-foot pole. Some swear by the value and convenience of PLR. It all depends on your purpose, needs and goals as an Internet Marketer.

While on the topic, I do have one confession to make (for those astute marketers who have the inside track on such things). Many of the articles in my free StarrBizz.com Internet Home Business Tips Newsletter have been written by an outside source. There are about 400 pre-written articles in that series and that is something I subscribed to when I first launched my StarrBizz.com website.

However, the majority of my blog posts are substantially or completely my own writing, except where otherwise indicated. And articles on my website with my name as author are also by my own hand.

My writing is a mix of experience, observation, opinion and research.

I can't tell you how many times I receive or review some form of promotional advertising that is totally unclear as to what it is trying to sell, or who is promoting it, or why I should care about the product, or how to get more details.

It could be a marketing email or a sales page on the Net or a promotional piece I receive via snail mail - you remember what snail mail is, don't you? That stuff you have to retrieve from a physical mailbox and actually touch with your hands? The problem with providing a clear sales message occurs even on television.

I can't believe how much time and money is spent on creating ad copy, or some other promotional piece, without making sure a clear message is being delivered.

Yesterday, I received a promotional piece in my snail mail that came from a government department, as it turned out, which means that my tax dollars helped pay for it. It was very colourful and was filled with information, but I am still trying to guess what the purpose or the bottom line message was.

I could quickly tell it was health-related. I "think" it was intended to promote a greater awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle ... but I am not certain. It wasn't clear. The text looked like it was trying to cleverly, with tongue in cheek, present the real message by making it sound like something entirely different. Almost a "reverse psychology" kind of tactic.

But, I gave up reading the piece, gave up trying to find out exactly who sent it and what the real message was. The only identification and contact info I could find was a website given at the end. I don't remember what the URL was and can't get it now because I threw the piece away in frustration. I know it was a government department, but that is all I know.

Obviously, some highly paid copywriter thought it was a clever idea and some government official bought into it. And I helped pay for it.

Somebody should have taken a step back, considered today's busy reader who has a very short attention span, and said, "We had better add something at the top that tells what this is, why we are sending at and what the reader should do about. Then we can launch into the clever word play."

Here's an example from television. I don't watch much TV, but I've heard of new Microsoft ads that feature Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld. According to earlier reviews, the initial ad didn't really say anything relative about Microsoft products or services. Competitor ads talk about features, benefits and comparisons to Microsoft products. But in the Microsoft ad, nothing. No purpose to the ad. Nothing compelling or memorable, aside from the two characters interacting.

My Ad Copy Tips For Clarity

My recommendation for advertising of any sort, whether it is for Internet Marketing, home-based business or whatever, is to give at least some hint at the beginning of what the main message is, or where it may be leading. Don't risk frustrating potential prospects who likely have short attention spans and low tolerance levels.

Early in the message, offer at least some detail that highlights the key benefits or features.

At strategic points throughout the message, tell the prospect to "buy now," or "click here," or "sign up today" or whatever it is that the advertising piece has been designed to do.

Be certain to prominently include your contact information, or website info, or some source of information to clearly identify yourself. Show it a few times in conspicuous spots; don’t make your prospect hunt for it, or wonder which hyperlink on the page is the one to get to you.

Ultimately, before you approve your ad copy for print or publication in any medium, step back and review it from the point of view of one of your prospective customers. Does the opening message capture your attention in a way that clearly tells you this is something you need to continue reading?

If the message is not clear, then you had better head back to the drawing board! The success of your Internet Home Business marketing efforts may depend on it.

1. Participate in chat rooms related to your targeted audience. Watch what questions people are asking and ask others what information they're interested in.

2. Examine what information in being broadcast on TV, news and talk shows. Hot current interest topics are usually highlighted.

3. Hang out in similar message boards. People leave questions for information they're seeking. That is a strong indicator of subjects to write about.

4. Survey your web site visitors or current customers. Ask them what type of articles they would like to see published on your web site or in your e-zine.

5. Regularly check your site's guest books. People sometimes leave questions or comments that would help you generate high readership articles.

6. Check online bookstores' best sellers lists. They're very good resources for finding winning topics and ideas to write about.

7. Use the time of year to come up with good topics. You could relate your content to the holiday, season, things that happened years ago during that time, etc.

8. Join some related e-mail discussion lists. Explore the question being asked and the subjects people are discussing.

9. Relate your article to a current fad that's going on in your specific industry. That topic is usually interesting to your target audience.

10. Make a file of visitor or customer questions you receive via e-mail or phone. Usually, others have the same questions, but never ask.
