When I was new to online marketing, I had a tough time keeping up with all the jargon - all the words and phrases and industry references that everybody under the sun seemed to know and understand but me!

SEO was the first Internet Marketing acronym to cause me grief and embarrassment in the online marketing forums.

I could tell that SEO was something extremely important by how often it came up in forum comments and by the way most marketers enthusiastically emphasized how critical SEO was to the success of any online business and how effective it was in producing results for them.

But everybody called it "SEO" and I didn't know what it was or how to do it. Finally, I had to ask, and again, that was embarrassing because I seemed to be the only one who didn't know what SEO stood for.

If I had been smart - and a little more Internet-savvy - I would have simply done an Internet search for the term. Then I would have quickly found out that SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and the search would also have produced some excellent insight into what SEO was and how to do it effectively.

Everybody has their own way to describe SEO. You could write a book on the subject. Wait a minute - many books HAVE been written on the subject! In addition to the basic principles of SEO, there are also some ongoing debates regarding the best applications as well as some of the evolving techniques of SEO.

SEO - Search Engine Optimization

Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, describes Search Engine Optimization as "the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via 'natural' ('organic' or 'algorithmic') search results. Usually, the earlier the site is presented in the search results, the more searchers will visit that site."

The Wikipedia listing goes on to say, "Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines."

The listing also says, "The term 'search engine friendly' may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems and shopping carts that are easy to optimize."

Personal SEO Experience

The most valuable SEO training that I have personally received has come from a group of mentors I have in the PIPS Power Group (For Plug-In Profit Site members). In particular, mentor Suzanne Morrison who provides PPG members with a free SEO guide titled, 10 Ways to Improve Your Search Engine Ranking.

- The importance of Keyword research, and how to do it effectively

- How to check for Keyword Density and why that is important

- The most important HTML tags in SEO: the "H1" tags and the "TITLE" tag, and how to add them to your web page

- Where to place Keywords for maximum effect (besides in the HTML tags just mentioned): ALT text; Link Titles; Domain name; File names; "H2" and "H3" tags; META Keywords and META Description tags

- The importance of Backlinks, how to check the number of backlinks your site has and how to get quality Backlinks

- Menus, Sidebars and Sitemaps

I refer to this guide regularly as I work towards optimizing my StarrBizz.com web site and I see immediate results every time I consistently apply the recommended techniques.

I also visit several popular online marketing forums to pick up SEO tips and engage in discussion regarding current practices and techniques.

SEO - Search Engine Optimization - is an area of Internet Home Business marketing where I find that the more I learn, the more there is yet to learn! But the value and importance of SEO is unquestionable and every online marketer should make an effort to learn the basics, if nothing else.
