Yesterday, I wrote about Speed vs. Stamina. Today, here is a true story offering seeds of inspiration to apply to your home based Internet business. Here are your 3 steps to web biz success.

This brief story is about a young woman who demonstrates focus, commitment and determination.

She is a wife, a mother and is active in the community. She also participates in marathons and recently entered a team in a charity-focused five-person relay race. On the day of the event, the other four members of the team failed to show due to illness or conflicting schedules.

Undaunted and determined, committed to the charitable cause, the young woman pressed on and ran the entire 25-kilometre five-person relay by herself on behalf of her team members.

She was able to successfully complete the relay race for three very good reasons:

1 - Commitment to the cause: She was driven by purpose, inspired by those afflicted with the disease that the event was raising funds for.

2 - Skill and Stamina: She had trained well for the event. She was prepared both physically and mentally.

3 - Focus: Her goal was clearly defined. Her focus was on the finish line. She didn't set out to see how far she could make it. Her aim was to complete the entire course despite the demands and challenges.

The young woman raised $1,600 for the cause and set a shining example of commitment, dedication and determination.

We who seek Internet Marketing success can apply these same qualities:

- we must be committed to success;
- we must be dedicated to developing the skills and stamina necessary;
- we must set clearly defined goals and cultivate an unswerving focus on attaining them.

In a nutshell, there are your 3 steps to web biz success. If your efforts falter at any stage of your business development, return to these three steps for inspiration, determine where you have strayed from your plan, and get yourself back on the winning track!

Today, July 1, the second annual Summer Contest got underway at the PIPS Power Group (PPG). The PPG is an online membership site offering a wide variety of marketing information, resources and personal mentorship from experienced members of the Plug-In Profit Site (PIPS) marketing group.

The primary purpose of the Summer Contest is to make PPG members aware of a particular list of best marketing practices and encourage them to develop daily habits of applying those best practices. Beyond awareness and skill-development, the ultimate goal is to help each contest participant advance their home based Internet business and increase their sales.

In launching the annual contest, one thing that our PPG mentors have emphasized is the fact that the contest is not a race: it's not how fast we achieve the contest requirements, rather it's how consistent our efforts are and how we stay focused and committed until the contest ends.

Also, our progress will be measured in a couple of specific areas. For example, the progress of our Alexa Ranking will be monitored throughout the contest as will the development of our Yahoo! inlinks (backlinks).

To remain in the running for the prizes we need only work steadily on the list of tasks, submit daily reports of our efforts ... and stick it out to the end.

What I like best about this contest is that the playing field is level. The tasks to be done and the process of measuring progress are designed to give each participant an equal chance. There is enough variety to compensate for the fact that different people have different skill levels and different areas of expertise.

The other thing I particularly like about this contest is that even though there are prizes to be won, everybody wins simply by participating. As mentioned, one object of the contest is to help PPG members improve their marketing habits and increase their marketing success. Every task a participant completes serves to promote and improve their home based business in some way.

One of the strengths of this contest is the simple fact that it is not a race, it is a marathon. And that is the best model I can think of for any home based web biz.

In tomorrow's blog post, I will share a story about a local woman who was in a relay race recently and how her focus, commitment and determination can be inspiring to us all.

For now, remember that when building your home based Internet business, speed vs. stamina should be taken into account when making plans and setting goals.

Ideas and options for a Home Based Web Biz are plentiful. Do an Internet search for terms like "web biz ideas" or "web biz opportunities" or "home based web biz" and you will find numerous sites offering a wide selection of online opportunities.

Finding the opportunities is not the problem. Choosing the ones that are best for you is where the challenge lies.

Do you want to sell a product? A service? A subscription to an online marketing resource site? Online training or personal development programs?

What kind of products do you want to sell? Physical products that require shipping? Digital products that can be delivered electronically immediately upon payment? Services that can be accessed online 24 hours a day, seven days a week?

Before deciding on the actual products or services, some marketers prefer to select a particular marketing niche to focus on. The niche will help define the most appropriate products to promote. Determine a likely niche market then create a detailed outline of the audience you plan to sell to. Profile your ideal target market. Get a clear picture of the kinds of products and services they will be interested in and most likely to buy.

When deciding what types of products or services to sell, there are two additional considerations that can help make the decision easier.

First, is it a product or service you feel comfortable promoting? If you have any doubts about the quality or function or value of the item, chances are you will have difficulty promoting it with any confidence or enthusiasm and that will drastically affect your marketing efforts.

Second, is it a product or service that you are familiar with and enjoy using? If it is something you have experience with, you are going to be much more confident and enthusiastic in promoting it and you will enjoy better results from your marketing efforts.

As a closing thought, it is good to note that all of marketing is a process of trial and testing no matter whether you are a new home based business enthusiast or an experienced web biz marketer. Each step of the way, all you can do is make the best decision possible with the information currently at hand, then make adjustments to your efforts over the course of time.

However, the starting point is to do some research to discover what Home Based Web Biz ideas are out there and which ones appeal to you the most.

It's that time of the year when I'm on the fly, off visiting family in faraway lands (well, over in the next province). Since I have only a few minutes to write this post, I'll keep it simple.

For the Internet Marketer, one of the biggest challenges can be attracting traffic to a website. With time, experience and effective Search Engine Optimization practices traffic will begin to grow naturally. In the mean time, a marketer needs to consider all opportunities for attracting traffic.

Here are a few website traffic ideas to think about:

- Offer free, original content. If you can be the only source for certain resourceful information, you will attract visitors.

- Offer a free newsletter or e-zine. If you set this up as a subscription in your autoresponder, subscribers will be reminded at regular intervals to visit your website for more great info.

- Offer other free stuff, like samples of your products or services or free software.

- Provide current, up-to-date links or full news stories that relate to your marketing niche or USP (Unique Selling Proposition).

- Provide a free onsite directory. It can be a directory of websites or certain topics or services, each related to your niche.

- Set up a free contest to attract visitors and return visitors. A quiz format is popular. Offer a prize or prizes. If you can, set it up so visitors can earn extra points for referring others to the contest, or to your website.

These are just a few website traffic ideas. Perhaps something here will spark some traffic ideas of your own!

In recent Web Bizz Blog posts, I've touched on a few business and marketing subjects such as competitive advantage, Unique Selling Proposition (USP), branding, Internet business strategy, and the difference between "marketing" and "selling."

In this post, I'll just make a few comments about the act and importance of selling.

Patricia Fripp points out that if you don't actually ask for the sale, how can you expect to make the sale?

Too many home based business marketers put a lot of admirable effort into "marketing" but neglect the "selling" part of the equation. Brian Tracy, iLearningGlobal Chief Learning Officer, explains that, basically, marketing is all the things you do to get the prospect's attention, and selling is the act of persuading them to buy.

Once you have the prospect's attention, your presentation must then focus on the specific needs, wants and desires that prospect may have. You move from a general "here's what we have to offer" to a more specific "this is what it will do for you."

You can improve the odds for sales success by targeting a specific audience and developing a Unique Selling Proposition.

Your marketing may attract qualified prospects, and your selling may go a long ways towards persuading them to buy, but ultimately, the success of your efforts will come down to telling the customer exactly what action to take and asking them to take it; that's the all-important sales question.

Always ask for the sale. Without prompting, many prospects hold back at the point of decision. If you ask for the sale, this will encourage them to make a decision and if your marketing and selling efforts have been effective, your prospect will happily say "Yes!"

Brian Tracy, bestselling author, professional speaker and successful businessperson, says, "If you want to win in today's marketplace, you have to engage in marketing warfare."

- What is your area of specialization?
- In what ways are you better than your competition?
- What is your Unique Selling Proposition and who is the customer that will most appreciate it?
- How do you want to be described by your customers? This description will influence everything you do to attract and keep your customers.

Brian also highlights the importance of "branding." Branding has been defined as "the promises you make and the promises you keep."

As a business leader and professional business coach, Brian's insight and recommendations have proven to be effective time and time again.

In these challenging times, whether you are looking to establish a traditional business offline or an Internet based home business, if you truly desire success, you are going to have to look at ways to step up your marketing efforts.

Of course, all success, whether business or personal, must begin with fervent desire, a sense of purpose, clearly defined goals, the ability to focus both attention and effort, and a firm commitment to the end result.

Success does not come from half-hearted efforts.
