Have you ever tried to navigate through one of those huge corn mazes? My spouse and I did last summer. It was great! In many ways, developing your Internet Home Business ideas and opportunities can present the same challenges.© GT Bulmer http://www.StarrBizz.comCorn mazes, often around nine feet tall and covering several acres of ground, can be a fun challenge for those so inclined - and for those with the patience to attempt such a challenge! Although corn mazes are nothing new, especially in certain regions of the world, my spouse and I took the a-mazing challenge for the first time last summer and we plan to do it again, soon, this summer. The corn maze we go to is at Prairie Gardens and Greenhouses, about an hour from our own community in northern Alberta, Canada. This maze is set up for all skill levels and you can choose to spend from 20 minutes to two hours navigating the maze. The challenges of the corn maze are very similar to the challenges of Internet Marketing: BlueprintYou need to have some kind of well-defined blueprint to help guide you through, to give you some direction and keep you moving towards the goal, in the case of a maze, the exit. However, for someone new to the maze, a blueprint may not be enough. It may be too confusing at first. When you are lost in the corn, you can't see the whole picture; every turn looks the same and you don't know which way to go. Hey, I've BEEN there! Instructions, DirectionsIt helps if the blueprint comes with some directions or operating instructions; something to point out the steps you need to take to get from Point A to Point B. Still, a set of directions or instructions may not always be the answer. When you are new to the maze, you may not have the personal insight to be able to properly interpret the directions. Interpreter NeededFor me, it's a good thing my spouse was there to interpret the corn maze directions. Hey! I'm a guy - you know, the explorer type. We don't read directions, we just charge forward! If my spouse wasn't with me, I'd STILL be there, lost in that corn maze. But knowing and interpreting the directions isn't always the complete answer, either. Drive, EnthusiasmYou need personal motivation to stay committed to the challenge and on the right path to success and achievement. What is your motivation? What is your goal? In the corn maze, your goal is to successfully overcome the challenge of the course. Keep your eyes on the prize - don't give up! Also, peer support is helpful. When others who can relate to your challenge are in the vicinity and cheering you on, their encouragement energizes you. The corn maze is much more exciting on busy days when more people are there sharing the experience. Partners in SuccessAlthough it is great to be running around the maze at the same time as others, it's even better when you can share the experience on a more personal level, not just with strangers casually passing by. When you partner, or buddy-up, with someone of like mind and with similar goals, the journey is far more enjoyable. In the corn maze, a spouse, or partner or close friend makes the experience much more memorable and meaningful. Okay, I confess: I'm not the best customer when it comes to buying retail consumer goods over the Internet. There are many benefits to having your own Internet Home Business. But when you choose to Work at Home, there can also be a few problems! Guess what? A few marketers might also warn you about some of the challenges and drawbacks. Benefits include: working when you want to work; being your own boss; choosing the kind of work you want to do, not what someone else says you have to do; taking breaks or time off when you want to; freedom to do your work any hour of the day or night; can be more available to family; no travelling or travel expenses; freedom to change or expand your business any way you want, any time you want; greater sense of personal achievement, fulfillment and job satisfaction... Drawbacks might include: you are fully responsible for your actions and your results; income is not guaranteed; there is a learning curve to develop the Internet Marketing skills and habits necessary for lasting success; there is a trial and error process to learn what marketing techniques work best for you and your skill level; when you work at home, interruptions and distractions might slow you down; you have no boss cracking the whip, so you really have to be focused, organized and determined... Work At Home Problems I Don't Mind HavingDistractionsHah! So what? Distractions just add variety to the day, and I work my own hours, so I'll just catch up later. No problem. I set my own deadlines, so they are VERY flexible. If I have a serious deadline (like, projects for my corporate writing clients), I just buckle down and ignore or eliminate potential distractions for a day or two. Distractions mean "freedom" to me. I have no boss threatening to fire me if I don't fulfill his or her daily expectations. No Steady PaycheckIt's always nice to pay your bills ... and pay them on time. When you work at home - especially in the beginning - you may not always get the money you need when you need it. It's good to have a backup plan, like savings to tide you over, or a part time job, if necessary. Eventually, when you quit working outside of the home entirely, the need to create income from your Internet Home Business will motivate you and keep you focused and active. Also, it is liberating to know that you are, or are becoming, self-dependent and independent. Again, the sense of freedom and self-direction is priceless. Late Lunches, Later Bedtimes!I don't know about you, but I totally enjoy and totally immerse myself in my work at home business activities. So much so that I lose track of time or, rather, choose to ignore the spinning hands of the clock (yes, I have a ticking analog on the wall.) Some days, the hands just seem to whir around like the blades of an airplane propeller. Most days, it's late afternoon before I break for lunch, and late, late at night before I drag myself away to bed. I love it! Again, that just says "freedom" to me. Ridicule and ScepticismInternet Home Business and work at home plans attract a certain type of individual - and the rest of the world just doesn't seem to get it! When you talk of such things to "regular" people, many question it, cast doubt, criticize and generally ridicule the possibility of personal development and achievement through a home business. Perhaps they are worried you will succeed? People say they mean well, but compare Internet Marketing to learning to play a piano. The first time you pound the keys without any prior instruction might not sound so good. Your well-meaning friends might tell you to give it up; you'll never play the instrument well, so why bother? However, if you take piano lessons and practice regularly, you can become a good player, maybe even a great player. You might even be able to make some money at it, if that's what you want. If you want to experience personal success, you've got to take the necessary steps to achieve it. Where would the world be without innovators, explorers, creative thinkers and risk-takers? If you see your reflection in any of these titles, there is definitely a place for you in the online culture of Internet Marketing. TaxesPeople complain about paying taxes, and I'm not always that cheerful about it, either. But think about it: the taxes you pay are just a percentage of your total income, so the more taxes you have to pay, the more money it means you are earning! That's a good thing, isn't it? Taxes might be a problem to some people, but that's a problem I'm willing to put up with. Alright, that's more than enough rambling for one day! My point is, when you are building an Internet Home Business or doing any kind of work at home activity, there are benefits and there are problems. In my opinion, the benefits far outweigh the problems. The bottom line is it is better to invest in yourself, even if it is part time to start, than it is to count on an outside employer for your financial future. It doesn't matter how much knowledge and skill you have, it is a proven fact that when you apply the Master Mind Principle to any endeavour, you will assuredly magnify your productivity and your results. Internet Marketing is no exception© GT Bulmer http://www.StarrBizz.comMany Internet Marketers and Internet Home Business enthusiasts make the mistake of trying to go it alone when they could easily team up with others of like mind and boost their efforts. Some call this particular kind of teamwork the Master Mind Principle. There are various interpretations of what the Master Mind is and how to apply it. I am going to keep my interpretation very simple and basic today. I first read about the Master Mind, oh, way back last century - roughly somewhere around the '80s - in the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Think and Grow Rich was originally published in 1937, I believe, and has since sold millions of copies. Hill's definition of Master Mind: "Coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose." Internet Marketers can apply this concept to everything from simple peer support and mutual encouragement, to joint venture agreements, to complete business partnerships. The idea behind the Master Mind is to draw upon each other's knowledge, experience, skills and strengths plus their levels of confidence, focus and commitment to the chosen goal or purpose. When you go it alone, you may hit moments of doubt or indecision that inhibit or completely block your progress. When you Master Mind with others your strength and resolve are magnified, empowering you to easily push through those same barriers. If you work well with others, joint venture agreements and business partnerships may be a good choice for you. Within those arrangements, each party assumes duties and responsibilities best suited to their skills and abilities. Where one is weak, the other will compensate, and vice versa. Success and achievement are thereby accelerated. If you are not interested in a formal business commitment, you can still use the Master Mind to enhance your progress. Simply "buddy up" with one or more marketer with similar interests and goals and make an informal commitment to encourage and counsel each other as needs arise. For example, I am a member of a particular group of focused Internet Marketers who communicate via a specialized, members-only business forum on a daily basis. We share marketing ideas, experiences and insights that inspire and encourage each other. When we have marketing questions beyond our own experience, or run into personal roadblocks, we take them to this Master Mind group and get the answers or encouragement that we need to overcome the obstacle. This group goes beyond the typical, generalized online business forum. We act as trusting confidantes, sensitive to each other's needs and goals. We often share a depth of insight and opinion that we would otherwise hold back in regular forums. That is the nature, the spirit and the trust of the Master Mind. When you enjoy that level of freedom of expression, the actions you take to build your business will become as bold as the questions you ask of your Master Mind group. For many people, one secret to success and achievement is the ability to replace "poverty consciousness" with "prosperity consciousness." This is also a key to survival during economic downturns.© GT Bulmer http://www.StarrBizz.comI'm hearing talk these days of economic downturns in certain regions of the world. Business people in those regions are concerned about the impact the downturns may have on their sales and income, and rightly so. Economic downturns are nothing new. Most of us have lived long enough to know that such downturns, depressions and recessions are cyclical and bound to happen from time to time. Various factors trigger them. Various factors bring them out again. The challenge is building strength into your source(s) of income to withstand the inevitable economic fluctuations. This takes a bit of foresight and planning. One way to build strength is to diversify your income streams so you are not dependent on just one. Another way is to build a business foundation that is not dependent on a local or regional economy. Internet Marketing as an ideal way to both diversify your income and assure economic independence. I think the benefits of Internet Marketing are probably obvious to most people. Very simply put, you can reach a larger group of people faster and with less expense than traditional marketing and advertising. Specifically, you can reach prospective customers who are not affected by your local economy. While the benefits are obvious, buy-in to the concept of Internet Marketing and Internet Home Business is not always so quickly embraced. In my experience, the reason is because some people are more focused on saving money than they are on making money. They are more obsessed with "protecting" what little they have than with taking steps to increase their wealth. I don't argue the value and importance of budgeting and being cautious with how, when and where you spend your money. I'm just saying don't let the fear of poverty blind you or paralyze you to the possibilities of prosperity. In other words, focus your thoughts on making money instead of on being broke or poor. When you focus on the positive side of an issue instead of on the negative side, all sorts of creative and inspirational thoughts and opportunities begin to materialize. Simply consider all possibilities that could move you forward, then choose the best ones to suit your present needs, interests and budget. If you are concerned about your budget, not to worry. Time and money are interchangeable. Save money by using less costly methods to build your business. It may take more time, but it will still move you towards your income goals. Speed isn't the issue: only forward motion. The talk I hear from some marketers these days is that they plan to cut back their marketing activity to save money during the economic downturn. If their customers are mostly local or regional, that may or may not be a good short-term solution. However, for the long term, I say they should consider diversifying their business by adding extra income streams and taking advantage of opportunities on the Internet to create that diversification. This will allow them to create a hedge against their locally depressed economy. Lately, I've been thinking about Niche Markets: how to leverage and diversify my Internet Home Business by adding a specialized niche site or two.© GT Bulmer http://www.StarrBizz.comMany years ago, while learning the ropes in traditional offline business, I picked up a motivational concept that has stuck with me all my life. It can be applied to business and to life in general. The concept is this: You are never standing still. If you are not moving forward, you are moving backward. Basically, what that means is you always have to be thinking and planning ahead and taking steps to improve and develop your business. You cannot rest on today's success. You cannot trust that your business practices today will continue to be effective tomorrow. Thinking ahead isn't always easy. Sometimes, we get so wrapped up in the urgency of today's marketing activity that we fail to take time to seriously think about tomorrow. I know I am like that. I run out of time each day and blame my poor focus on planning on being too busy. Sometimes, events conspire in our favour in a backwards sort of way. If you have read my last few blog posts, you will know that family matters have kept me busy the past few weeks. In particular, I've been doing a lot of highway driving. Over the past seven days, I think I have spent almost as many waking hours on the road as I have doing anything else. Since I can't do computer or Internet work while driving down the highway, the only other thing I can do when not engaged in conversation is exercise my brain. So, I used the time to think about my Internet Home Business in general and Niche Marketing in particular. Right now, my Internet Marketing focus is fairly general. I promote a portfolio of affiliate programs and services, plus a few other products and services. I will keep building on that generalized foundation, but I am planning also to create a highly focused niche site or two. I have a few Niche Marketing guides plus some other sources of information to review before I make any decisions. As I learn about the advantages and methods of Niche Marketing I will write more about it here in future blog posts. For now, I must resign myself to the "thinking" stage of my Niche Market research because over the next several days, I am committed to helping another family member with a project, then my spouse and I are off next week on another long road trip to a short family reunion. Uh, the reunion is short, not the family. Busy, busy. I said it before and I'll say it again - thank goodness my Internet Home Business is built on systems that keep running whether I'm here or not.
